It is not a common failure I have heard of, but age is catching up on all older stuff (like me!).

A used one may be the cheapest way to go. Erie Vo-Vo?

Yes, thinking of a used one but hard to know that the micro-switch within is still good or not until it is installed.

Why does it matter, in so far as, what was the purpose of the chime running on after you closed the door ?

Just already get used to the chime after I close the door before starting the car. Now, it feels too quiet
