Do you know how old the serpentine belt is? If it is the same vintage as the timing belt then swap it. If it breaks it can take out the timing belt cover and the belt. As you have it off anyway, might as well do it now. Make sure to check how the belt is threaded around the engine parts and try to get a picture to help although it is hard to do.

Good Luck!

Thanks for that foggydogg & scott850..

I'm getting ready to do it all in about 12 hours time. I unfortunately have no way of getting the serpentine belt during the weekend as the dealership parts department is closed, and obviously cannot get it shipping from overseas in a day. I guess I'll check the condition, and if it looks ok I'll do it in the next 6 monthly service; if not, I'll do it sometime during the week.

I've got quite a bit to do since I'm also giving it a full service + fixing a leaky tyre.

I'll post my results on here when I'm done.

I’m working on it now and I’m stuck here. There are two markings that I can see on the sprockets, an M and a white mark. Which could it be?

I’ve uploaded photos of the sprockets, can anyone help? Thanks.

Ignore the ‘M’. Its purpose is to confuse you. The timing mark is the tiny mark, probably at or very near the white paint.

Legend Twarr. Appreciate the quick reply. The timing is now all done, except I accidentally rotated the sprockets a tiny little bit (think 2mm off centre), then rotated it back while taking off the crank. Is this a problem?

Also if I do accidentally rotate the sprockets can I just rotate the crank and line it up again or does the job now become complicated?

Do I need to do the 90 degrees VVT thing again, or just rotate and align like normal

Okay, I’m done for the day. Aborted the timing belt for today until I get the above cleared up.

Basically what happened was that I couldn’t get the last bolt off the harmonic balancer because it was obscured, and I resorted to trying to use a wrench which turned the crank. I then without thinking turned it backwards. How do I go about correcting this, and making sure the timing is still ok?

The sequence of events isn’t really clear. If the belt is still on, and you moved the crank clockwise, the VVT hub will not be in the correct place. Turn the crank and line up again using the “90 degrees past then back to the marks” procedure”.

Do you have access to a crankshaft hooding tool?

Ah yeah I should've been more clear here.

The timing belt is definitely still on, I have not even started removing that yet.

I turned the crank counter clockwise as well...but I understand that if the belt is still on (which in my case it is), then it should be fine.

Okay yeah I'll do the 90 degrees past the mark and back procedure again and line it up. I'm attempting this tomorrow, and besides this I think I've got everything else down.

I'll post my experiences here when I'm done.

Thanks for the reply mate.
