850 feels like it it's missing

Wow, that is a hole alright. And the color and deposits on those two valves are different from all the others - but that could have been from after it burned through.

I noticed that the machine shop that rebuilt this engine, used a liberal amount of anti-seize on the head bolts. I didn't think that was the recommended procedure for these engines. If it's not, could this have had anything to do with oil getting into the cylinder and causing the burnt valve ? I'm thinking that now I'll have to clean out the bolt holes on the block to get rid of that compound.

Is it really anti-seize, or is it possibly a thread sealer? Do the bolts go into the water jacket? I'd go for whatever Volvo specifies, as that's the best way to get a good torque.

No it's anti-seize. My hands looked like the tin mans after handling them.

afaik, you aren't supposed to put anything other than oil on these bolts, and yes, when you're putting it back together, get the threads and bolt head slightly damp with oil, that is to lubricate the bolts when you torque them down, if not you risk getting the head to surface torque instead of head to thread. But asking your question, probably unrelated to your burnt valve
