Zeek, on our '04 V70, instructions said to remove the IC (turbo) pipe, but I said fooey. Sure enough with some wiggling, I got the cover off and out without taking the pipe off. I used no connectors, a long one on some as well as an "L" shaped torx wrench to get the torx screws out.

I have a 1999 S70 T5. When I took off the plastic cover over the plugs my visual is not the same in the tutorial as shown in steps 1 thru 5. I don't have a heavy duty rubber cap for each plug instead I have some sort of plastic retangular box for each plug. I was hesitant to try to remove them till I get further clarification. I think being a turbo is the result. Any pics for a T5 spark plug change? Thanks
Jim

Just take the screws off, those rectangular things are the same as the rubber caps. Same principle as the pre-'99 models, just a slightly different design.

Is anyone else worried about debris falling into the combustion chamber as the plug is removed? Given the plug is way down at the bottom of that hole, it seems any crap that falls into that area will drop through the opening when the plug is removed. In an attempt to clean the area before plug removal, I break the plugs loose, and then use a shop vac to suck out the plug area. Overkill?
I also use the rubber hose to remove the plugs as well, once loosened. That way any std deep socket can be used.

Some say 30K for the OEM Volvo plugs and 10K-20K for Bosch copper. Anywhere between these should be fine unless your plugs start having problems sooner.

Those plastic rectangular boxes are your individual ignition coils. Beginning with MY 99 the ignition is electronically controlled, so instead of one external coil and a distributer, you have individual coils and ignition is controlled by the computer. But for changing the plugs, you just remove the retaining bolt for the coil and everthing else is pretty much the same as before.JimG wrote:I have a 1999 S70 T5. I've never run into much of anything down there but it would provide "cheap insurance" to either vac or blow with compressed air to clear the plug well. I wouldn't call it overkill, just precaution. Is anyone else worried about debris falling into the combustion chamber as the plug is removed? I use the poor man's shopvac: canned air. You know, those keyboard cleaners/photo duster cans.
But I use the red little hose they come with and point it down the hole, otherwise tipping the can to point the stream down releases liquid, not gas.
