I agree...try a different MAF and see what happens.

Man I looked on VS but couldn't find anything, thanks for the link. I have however plugged/unplugged it a good number of times to "clean" the connector and also used an electrical contact cleaner on both male and female connectors. They are clean with no issues.

I'm scared I exacerbated the problem by cleaning it, after cleaning it and running it a few miles it seems to now run worse. :?: :?: I'm lost. Hopefully I can find one around here to swap, if not I will ebay a used one for ~$70.

Wish you were closer, I'd lend you mine.
Actually, my brother-in-law lives in Raleigh...he drives an S40, but I don't think those MAF's are the same.

EDIT: Just checked...no they're not the same. Be happy you don't have the S40...for his model (even from Eeuroparts) this things is almost $300. Wow!

Yeah I was Advance Auto last night looking up parts and the guys were flabbergasted at the price of our parts. They were thinking if might be the Idle Air Control Valve and their parts showed it a $500+ item, one of the guys said "Christ that's a $20 part on a Chevy!!".

Thanks for checking on your BIL's MAF though I appreciate it!

A dumb question, when was the last time you check your flame trap and the engine breath system?
I had very rough idle (felt like near death syndrome) a year ago, and solved by cleaning that thing and replaced a few broken elbows.
Btw, I noticed you posted on VS about ATF and tranny shift problem. I too had sluggish shifting a while back, flush atf didn't help that much. It was resolved, a lucky shot, after replacing my fuel pump. Now, my tranny works like new and motor has more pop at high demand situations like go up a hill or passing at 70-80mph.
Just for your reference, yours could be very different from mine.
Good luck!

Thanks al yes I checked those they look good, I think at least. Everything is clear and no blockages or seepage or anything. I think my tranny issue (besides the foaming, which I haven't gotten much of lately) is directly related to this on/off/on surge and bucking. I was attributing it to the tranny but it is something else. I am hoping MAF because that is an easy swap although I am scared it is something deeper. Still haven't found a MAF to swap yet so I might try calling a few shops they might have one lying around I can just try for $10 or something.

Just beware that if it's just lying around, it's apt not to be a good one.

Matt, did you also check your airbox thermostat? A couple years ago mine went bad, which caused that near stalling/bucking as well. Also, it would cause MAF malfunction.

Very true on a non-turbo 850. Worth a check
