Re: XeMODeX ETM- Who has had it done?

At XeMODex swap +1500 miles I'm starting to see, intermittently, hesitation then surge under load, for example acceleration from a stop or climbing a steep hill, sometimes repetatively. All former ETM symptoms such as hunting idle are still clear. No codes are being set. I don't think this is an ETM problem, perhaps the MAF. The '99 S70 now has over 200K and as far as I know the MAF has never been changed. I just ordered a new one from FCP Groton. Also the S1 O2S only dithers between 0.4V and 0.5V. Sounds like this needs replacing also.

Problem is intermittent and appears to be getting worse, and seems to only occur after having been driving awhile/warm engine. I'll be pulling into a parking spot and the engine will suddenly give an impulsive surge for no reason. Surges and/or hesitations are about 3/4 second long. I unplugged the MAF sensor and still appear to be seeing the same symptoms ("appear" because this problem is intermittent, more driving time is needed). This problem did not occur the first 1500 miles after installing the XeMODex upgrade.

5/1: Hopefully this is my final update on this topic. I replaced my MAF sensor Wednesday evening and things immediately got better. There are still very intermittent/very occasional (perhaps once a day on a 30 mile each way commute) subtle sags and surges when accelerating/decelerating, but the not-so subtle, occasional, sometimes repetitive, sags/surges appear (after 200 miles of hypersensitive alert driving) to be gone. The engine is also much more responsive to the accelerator pedal. Previously, when I hit the accelerator on the freeway to merge/pass/etc., there was a 1/2 to 3/4 second delay before the engine reponded. Now it responds immediately! It feels like my car is young again!

After fighting with Volvo Canada for an ETM that was out of warranty for 2 months (had symptoms for 3 years, and service recs to prove) I replaced my yellow stickered ETM with one from Xemodex. $95 to Fedex on a Monday a.m. and received it back on Wednesday p.m. 10 minutes to reinstall, and no problems.....Great service, highly recommended. I am proof that this job can be done by a DIYer. I did this job myself in the driveway last week. It took several hours Tuesday evening to get the ETM out but some of that time was due to having cheap tools, an inadequate tool for a certain task, and caution to not break anything. I hand carried the ETM Wednesday AM to TDP in Loveland, CO and picked it up on Friday. Again a few hours to get it back in, but success!

Previous to this, the car had exhibited the classic surge and bounce symptoms both at idle and when cruising about 40 mph. These were not severe and I suspect that given the low miles on the car and yellow ETM sticker that there weren't too many miles on the Volvo replaced ETM, yet the symptoms were there. I decided to replace the ETM with the XeMODeX unit as soon as I could because my wife drives the car and dependability was the priority over cost.

After replacement, the idle is pegged at 700 rpm and the car responds to the accelerator as it should. I'll test drive from time to time to keep posted on performance.

I'll also tell the story of meeting Don Willson and my tour of TDP in a later post.

ETM sticker color: yellow
ETM replaced? Yes
How Many times? Don't know, at least once with yellow tag Marelli unit prior to this time.
Mileage ETM installed? Previous iteration, Don't know.

The TDP/XemodeX folks responded quickly and the rebuilt unit worked like a champ with no dashboard warnings the first few times. :D

It still works fine as far as we can tell from driving the car, but we're getting the ETS lamp on constantly, starting just after we kept the key on for four hours to enable the radio to be reset (bad code the first time). Pep Boys generic download gear didn't pull any codes in this case, and no other warning lights or symptoms, but the ETS is persistently lit. :|

Initial results with XeMODex are very good. Nice, smooth acceleration. No surging. :D

Local independent mechanic did the job, but did not know about the XeMODex product. I provided the information, he did the work.

Volvo dealer refused to replace ETM stating that no trouble codes present. Still charged me $100 for "diagnostics."

Had a nice note from Chris Golinski, president of Xemodex, and have now sent the dealer's read-out and throttle potentiometer sensor graph to him and to Jody at TDP in Loveland (just up the interstate a couple of hours). Hoping there's a fix besides "remove and replace", but if that's what it takes, at least we should only have to do it one more time.
 It still runs fine, just that danged light.

I noted that neither the dealer nor the two decent independent Volvo shops here in town, nor one that I spoke to in Denver, were even aware that Xemodex /TDP existed and was doing re-manufacturing of these ETMs...or at least the folks who should have known (service managers) didn't. I told them it was fairly new on the market, and tried to get them interested enough to check it out...

Installed myself in about 1.5 hours. I did not have to remove the fan assembly. It wasn't as hard to do as I expected. Could do in <1 hour now that I've done it once.

Engine fired right up - no ETS light! The test drive went without any difficulties.I highly recommend Xemodex's superior product! I'll be returning my second ETM soon for a modified unit.
