Re: 1998 v70 xc - Automatic trans - button on shifter sticki
does anyone have an Volvo service manual on dvd for sale? 1998 v70xc
How do you remove the shifter knob in step 1? Last thing I want to do is break it. I see that the side tabs hold the leather surround up. I got that down, but I don't see what holds the knob onto the shaft and it's pretty snug.
Why does accountability keep hitting a glass ceiling?

Here are some additional pictures to supplement existing replies. The iPd kit comes with color instructions and a spring.AdlerV70 wrote:Nevermind. Just pull straight up real hard and look away so you don't fatten your own lip when it lets go!

Thanks for the extra phohos. Today I finally got around to making one fully functional, and aesthetically pleasing shifter out of three.
My original black one on the left, from which I took the black button and installed it in the one on the right. I just put the grey piece back into the old one, as to not loose the pieces. (you never kknow)
I sprayed some white lithium grease in there to keep things moving.
The part that was originally confusing me, was that you have to pry the button out from the top to simply slide it up an out.
Thanks again for the explanations, I had to dig up this thread again to remember.

Great step by step and pics ... wasn't sure where that spring went. BTW, I placed a block of wood on top of the console and then used a screwdriver to pry the top off with a tap of my hammer. (Wish I'd read this before I spent an hour removing the entire shifter assembly out of junker at the u-pull-it.)

So my button is stuck out (won't depress), therefore not allowing me to take the car out of park. My shift override button doesn't work to get the car into neutral either. How do I get the shifter off to replace the button if I can't get it into neutral? I pulled up on it and it won't budge. . . I assume it needs to be in neutral to get it off. Can I switch the car into neutral from under the hood? Please help! (1998 Volvo V70R AWD Turbo)

Pull very hard using both hands and wiggle it left and right. Keep your face away from above your hands or you may knock yourself out.
