it's not a common occurrence, but typically happens when there is a sharp change in the weather, another reason for me to suspect moisture is getting into the relay. i'll pull the relay at some point to look at it, but for some reason was under the impression that my car didn't have a starter relay??

I'd suggest starting simple and beginning at the beginning. Ignition switch.
It's a part of the car that gets used every time you drive and does wear out.
From there, run down the circuit towards the starter. It's all in the diagrams.
