There used to be one on the Motor Mile in Christiansburg. The Volvo dealer is up in Roanoke too, if you are going that far.

Motor mile does not seem to have VW any more. Anyway, I checked out NAPA, and they stock CHF 11S. But all two cans left just sold yesterday. They are going to get me one by Monday morning. I told them to get me CHF 202 instead of CHF 11S, just because that's what shows up on IPD. Until then, I will leave my car alone.

Update: I used one and half can of that fluid, and that did the magic. My steering is like never better,

FYI & to summarize:

The manuals are wrong for 1999 V70 & similar

These cars take OEM/Synthetic power steering fluid

Napa sells Pentosin synth steering fluid for half the price at the Volvo Stealers OEM.

OF course I checked Napa a week after I used the Volvo stuff.

You can use either Pentosin synthetic OR ATF. Doesn't matter as long as it is only one or the other, not a mix. I've been using Mobil 1 Syn ATF for a couple years now with no problems!

I never did drive it that way but 4 or 5 iterations of the drain the reservoir, refill, run the steering lock to lock a few times and repeat cleared the system and it worked fine.

My Volvo's all take "a quality ATF" - per the owners manual - but I have nothing newer than a '98. In reality I think either one is likely fine but don't mix them together.

For 1997-850 NA, would MOBIL ATF 3309 a good match for "a quality ATF"?
It groans each morning when steered out.
It would be a Simple Suck & Fill with lock-to-lock method repeated 3-4 times.

The 3309 is a "quality ATF" but it is also very expensive and I don't really think there is any advantage to using it over a standard Dex III+ ATF. I worry about leaks in the seals on the rack so I tend to stick with the standard red stuff. The flushing method is as simple as you describe it.
