Sorry to hear that, it is always something. Talking about turbocharger whine on the cold start, is it possible to have partially clogged oil supply to it ? She is only at 40k, the only thing has been done not to her complete liking is a regular 87 oct. fuel which is, however , permitted by manufacturer. Thanks.

Why do you do that?
These cars do not like 87. While it won't "damage" anything, it won't run well and will get worse mileage.

Switched to Premium- what a difference! Yet, the whining sound still there, with no SAS pump, no serp. belt and everything new under the timing cover, including the water pump. Doubt it is turbo (unless I am wrong), as the noise begins at low RPM- about 1000 and up.Could it be transmission? Thanks.

I agree, but the question is: should I just ignore it or start tearing it apart (might be the best time of my life).How was it in your case and what did you have to do to correct it?

Have the same symptons in 1986 850R, has been evident now for over twelve months. After replacement of water pump, timing belt and timing belt idlers and with serpentine belt off and therefore no P/S, A/C or alternator turning, noise was still evident. Therefore believe we can negate front end of engine. Car has done 269K, has been on Mobil 1 since new (one owner), filter and oil changed every 7.5K. Considered trans and torque converter, perhaps oil draining from T/C overnight and at startup next day noise was attributed to pump filling T/C. Checked trans oil level when cooled at night and was the same level in morning. Noise is intermitent, some time will not be evident for a couple of days and then back again. Noise, when evident is relevant to engine rpm. Oil sampling has indicated trans oil degrades badly after 40K, therefore trans oil changed regularly about that time. Noise when evident appears to be around fuel injectors, but even with a stethoscope, very hard to pin point as noise appears to be along the crankshaft axis. When bad, you would believe the noise was coming from a camshaft front bearing, but again not able to be pin pointed. Thoughts were that it was temperature related to a fluid and still believe same. Further to the above testing, this only leaves coolant, engine and trans oils, no P/S. The following would indicate the worst incidence. Start in morning, ambient about 15C, whirring noise indicated, some 30 seconds go by putting on safety belt etc, select reverse and back out of driveway, noise at engine rpm. Select D, drive 20M to corner, noise still evident at engine rpm. Turn right and travel further 60-80M down a hill at which time only low engine rpm, noise still evident and then volume increases and then stops and will not re-occur for remainder of day. Believe that when noise stops as referred above, lockup of T/C and D would have occured. Love to have some feedback, do not believe in our instance that it is a major issue, BUT!!

Thanks for feedback, yes you may be on the right track with oil pump located at front of engine. This vehicle has been subjected to oil sampling (engine and trans) since new and there is nothing to suggest by way of elements in analysis results that would suggest an out of specification scenario. Notwithstanding this point and as previously referred, it is possible that relief valves for both engine and trans lubricating/cooling circuits may be the cause of the noise and once oil temperature is raised slightly, the problem stops. The cause could be cavitaion (?) or just chattering of relief parts. Have added on separate occasions, Lubeguard additive products to engine and trans, but with no change to evident noise. Please keep the thoughts coming as will make us think further outside of the square. Has anyone had experience with harmonic balance causing the noise indicated? Visual inspection does not indicate degradation. Any further advancements on trans and/or T/C? Thanks again

I've had a similar noise which did not go away even after doing complete T belt job and changing everything on Serp belt track and alternator bearings. Traced it to to the EVAP solenoid valve and the noise went away after replacing it and adding the check valve between EVAP valve and manifold that wasn't original to the 94's. Without that check valve the EVAP solenoid valves get a lot of carbon buildup which seems to make it chatter when the valve opens, which of course it does on startup to purge the charcoal canister. This might be the reason Volvo cocooned the EVAP valve in that big sleeve of foam rubber, to try and muffle any sounds it might make.
Try disconnecting the EVAP valve vacuum line at the manifold and plugging the hole before next cold start and see if the problem goes away, that is how I tracked it down. Computer threw a CEL but that was easily taken care of.
Once I took care of that noise the next one that bothered me was the automatic test of the ABS pump motor at 20 MPH. Before I couldn't hear that it was a different, separate noise and didn't know what it was until I read about it here on this forum.

Jeff, many thanks for prompt reply. Could you please expand upon the location of the EVAP solenoid valve, believe it to be under the bonnet? Secondly, is the EVAP solenoid valve connected directly to the inlet manifold, or connected to "tree" block at rear and to left of engine when viewed from drivers seat. Oh we are talking Aus so R/H drive. Thanks, Barry
