Alignment with the engine on installation can be a bear, so I tried I trick I'd read about elsewhere, and it worked very well. Two long bolts were found of the same size as the main engine/transmission bolts. The heads were cut off these bolts, and then threaded into two of the mount holes on the engine. The transmission was then lifted and slid onto these protruding bolts (now studs really...). This made engagement with the clutch and locating dowels much easier. Once the transmission is in place, those studs should unthread easily by hand, allowing the original bolts to go in their place.

Nice!!!!!!

I would like to attempt this Project on my 850t5R. Apart form Jacks and Engine support are there any major tools. I would like to purchase the Clutch Kit for the 850R and Main Seal and machine the flywheel as the gearbox grinds going into 5th at little- are these there any other major items to consider like the throwout bearing .. thanks for the writeup appreciate any responses.

Hey never owned a Volvo but I’m looking to purchase a v70 that needs a clutch change.
Would it be possible to just lower the engine on the subframe instead of supporting it from above?

I don't think it would make sense to do that, you would be dropping the rack and front suspension down along with the engine. Then you would still have to lift the trans off the subframe. It makes more sense to go up with the engine trans unit and separate it on the floor, or go up with the engine leaving the trans. or vise versa. However I have not done any of these. thats why they made the hood open vertically. If you did drop the whole mess you would have to separate the steering input shaft coupler lock the steering wheel, and separate the struts from the knuckle or tower. and cut the break lines. jacking that back up and making those connections all at once would be tricky.

You can do it either way.

When I changed the clutch I supported the engine and maneuvered the transmission out of the bottom. I changed an engine on another one and pulled the engine and transmission together out from the top. You can drop the subframe and get to the same place but I really didn't have the ability to get the car high enough to slide everything out from under it. My driveway has a fairly steep incline and I wasn't comfortable jacking the front end of the car 3 feet in the air when it already wants to jump the chock blocks.

While we're here, how much sealant should one use and of what type? I put a sensible drop of blue Permatex thread locker on the bolts and torqued per spec. I didn't realize those holes were a potential leak point or I'd have used an unreasonable amount.

Has anyone else used just a drop of Loctite on the threads, and if so what was the outcome? Looking for specific experiences here.

Easier and cheaper to drop if you buy hanger vs cherry picker. You can fab the hanger event cheaper too.

Good time to renew subframes bushings, and engine mounts. Excellent time to reshim AC compressor while it’s easy accessible

You don’t need car up high at all, I had it on jack stands with a 4 inch lumber safety. You have to destrut To pull driveshafts too, so Car needs to be up either way.

Figure 12 hours total R/R
