Warped rotors

Post by islandboy »

I believe you have warped rotors due to over torque of the lugs. Once the rotors are warped.....well....they just stay that way until you buy new ones. I'm waiting until I need brakes and then will replace them together. Sorry, it couldn't be better news. I started using a torque wrench for tire rotations "after" I warped mine.

I dont think its the nuts or torque. It something else....got to be. Second opinion?

Damn, I can't retorque my wheels! The nuts are way too tight, from experience, its clearly not 81lbs/in! I would really love to find the cause of the problem, because the rattling is somewhat violent in my 850. At first I thought the ABS went whack or something, because I was on a metal surface (Street car tracks).

I would really love to solve this problem. I'll again try to retorque once I get my hands on a air-compressed ratchet  . Then the rotors, which needs replacement anyway.

It's always a good idea to figure out just when things went bad. Did you have this vibrations since you purchased the car or did it occur right after you had some work done that would require the whels to be taken off and put back on (by someone that has not read your Volvo manual)? In my case the braking was fine and there was no vibration until I rotated my tires. The Volvo mechanic I use said that I overtorqued the lugs. He said it was very common. Thanks.....now he tells me!

Hey,
I took the 850 wagon for a road trip recently...and I am convinced that its the rotors and breaks. It was hard to believe at first but I think these guys are right about the torque. Anyway thanks for all your replies.

As for me, I'm going to need new rotors and pads anyhow. Now I have a second problem, which can also be related (doubt it though), the rear top engine mount cracked (hairline crack one day, large-a** crack the second)

RE: brake vibration, I had the same problem several years ago. The very rough vibration came from the rear of the car, and it began to happen right after I replaced the pads with "Autozone" specials...well, come to find out from the dealer, "you're supposed to only use VOLVO pads". So I bought VOLVO pads and it took care of the problem immediately..

Hey,
I replaced the motor mount its not the source of the problem....but those breaks may very well be. I bought this car from someone else and the breaks look new but im almost certain they're not volvo. And the sound is comming from the rear, thanks for the opinion.

Somehow it does not make sense to me that the rotors would warp due to overtorquing the lug nuts. I looked at it yesterday and it just does not seem to have any phisical relationship. Can someone confirm this? I'm just curious..

Thanks!
