Thanks for the information, Sarahbau. I've fitted an IPod to my BMW bike using a Dension Ice>Link Plus and it works fairly well. I was hoping to do the same to my V50, but if there's no input socket on the radio, it looks as if I'll have to go the FM Modulator route.
Where is the Radio unit on the V50?

iPod for my new S40 T5

I need to know more about Sarahbau's idea to hardwire the s40 for an fm modulator. I have a 2005. I believe Sarahbau says to pull up the rear deck cover. I didn't pull it up because I was afraid I'd damage it. However, from the trunk I can see up thru the sheetmetal to a box on the rear deck under the felt cover that has two standard (not coax) wires going into a proprietary nylon fitting coming out from a box about 1"x5'x3'. Is this the afm unit? Can anyone advise?
My wife and I just got a new S40 and, since I'm not too into ripping things apart, am getting ready to have the iPod FM Transmiiter installed. Does anyone have this?? I have a 5th gen (video) ipod. Will it work with this?
If possible, a quick answer would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Probably. Transmitters work by taking the signal from the headphone jack on the iPod and broadcasting it to the car's radio. Pretty straightforward.
Not as good as hardwired though. You might want to look for a car audio place (with a GOOD reputation -- do your homework) that has hardwired solutions to this.
See my thoughts on iPods and FM transmitters:

Thanks Matt.
I was wondering if the ipod would fit in the holder. It says on the Volvo site that it works with all ipods except the shuffle. Also, apple is promoting the connection (both the wired and FM transmitter) on their site under the iPods, so my guess is that it works.
If not, I figure I have some recourse as the Volvo site says all ipods except shuffle.
Thanks again.

I just hardwired my 2000 s40 thanks to Sarahbau's post. The sound is great.
I bought the following and installed it myself. Pretty easy once I got the right parts. Here is what I used.
To the Radio
http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productD ... VCookie=No
From the Radio
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Metra-Vo ... tDetail.do
FM Modulator that I hid behind the radio area
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Delphi-F ... tDetail.do
I can put up pictures if someone needs help doing this.
I have a question for you guru's. My electrical socket doesn't work and when I took a look underneath it I think there is suppose to be a plug that goes into another plug that leads to the socket. Is this right or am I looking at something weird??

Thanks!
I'm going to try and post up pictures of what was connected and how, sometime today...getting my xm hardwired to the radio. Sorry for being so late on this request.

Dear All,
I followed your instructions and wired my Harman Kardon Drive + Play with the FM-modulator using the 9V-method. A nice unit the HK - I have to say, background hiss is minimal.
At first I did a test install in my sister's car, a Peugeot 206 with a normal car radio and normal antenna. Although there was a small hiss (no filter used yet), the music came out at full dynamic range, better or at least equal to FM-radio.
Then I opened my Volvo S40 (2006) at all sides, made the antenna patch cables (soldered them) etc. and did a clean install.
I have to say, the music comes out of the radio on every frequency I chose, overruling any and all radio station that is broadcasting on that particular frequency. Like I said, minimal background hiss.
Three problems however:
1. The dynamic range seems limited (like some kind of stereo AM quality instead of stereo FM)
2. Harder rock songs seem to break up and make the sound awful
3. Whether I plug in the antenna and modulator or I leave it out of the HK unit, the sound remains unchanged (bleeding through the air)
Could it be my patch cables (no connection with the FM modulator)? Radio reception is fine.
Can I hack in anywhere else after the window AM/FM unit into either one of the antenna cables (I found them in the door)?
Any help is appreciated...
Thanks!
Michel
Note: in my S40 there is no AFM module on the hat shelf, only an AM/FM unit near the back window (driver's side) where the connection to the window antenna is (9V clips)

OK.
I've got a 2006 S40 and I'm trying to do the hardwire thing.
Where EXACTLY is the AFM so I can get the FM Modulator plugged in? I've had the rear hat shelf cover up but see nothing there.
Could really use some help on this one and would love to get this done.
Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated. (the more detailed the better).
Thanks.
