That threw me for a loop once too. Since I don't use the valet mode that often I was all upset thinking the trunk release was broken until I started the car to go somewhere and a message on the DIM reminded me valet mode was active. I found the source of the problem. The "only the key will open the trunk" button in the cabin was engaged.
The times I use valet mode are when parking for short periods with the windows down or sunroof open. It's a very small town almost no crime of this type of nature, generally it's ok so long as there's nothing in the cabin to reach in and grab. One in awhile I'll have a laptop or something of value in the trunk so I'll activate valet mode to keep someone from reaching in and unlocking the car with the door switch which would give them access to the trunk.
