Wow, this is perfect, just what I was hoping for. I'm going to pick up one of those battery things and carry some jumper cables too. I've got a Gorilla wrench I'll put in the back now. The jack, would a bottle jack with a metal plate or hefty block of wood work OK? I'll bring a jack stand too. It's just me and my wife traveling and the V70 is perfect with a lot of room for lots of stuff. This car is fast becoming my favorite. I'm even looking for another or a 96/97 850 to become a cream-puff car in retirement.

Add a bottle of Jack to the bottle jack! (Daniels that is). Also lots of sandwiches.

Forgot to include road flares. And if you have to use them, be smarter than the rest of the driving population. Its a pet peeve of mine when someone breaks down and places a road flare (or a triangle reflector thingy) 2 feeet from their car. I mean the idea is to give you enough warning to change lanes or stop from 65 MPH. 2 feet doesnt do it.

So, road flares.

I'm with rspi. My wife actually is better organized and thinking so I learned from her but all our cars ahave complete survival kits in them :

first aid kit

bottled water
disposable rain ponchos
long shelf life snack bars
candles and matches
blanket
tow rope
small fire extinguisher

Fresh in my mind from replacing one on my '93 850 this morning is an accessory belt. I just replaced mine with a new one last August and it delaminated along the outer edge sitting in traffic yesterday. I didn't want to drive it with the loose end flying around banging on my TB cover and the overflow hose, so that was a tow. First time I've used AAA for a breakdown in the 3 years I've had it.

So AAA Plus (less than $100.00 per year) provides for up to 4 one hundred mile tows or road service calls.

Throw an accessory belt and a 3 foot 1 x 2 stick in your kit. See my post for details.

I went through this preplanning anxiety before heading from Minnesota to Toronto last summer in a '96 850 wagon (5 speed stick; 132k miles) that I bought for the trip. I had a ~4 cu ft tub with tools, spare parts—including a fuel pump, bulbs, and many of the other items mentioned above. I did an ignition tuneup, replaced a lower control arm, did the TB, rollers, etc., but not the water pump; and a new accessory belt, all of which it needed. A window switch had failed so had to replace the master switch panel. Hint: if you have a failed window switch and the window won't close, you can remove the door liner and servo motor, manually hold the window up and drive a sheet metal screw through the inner sheet metal into the scissor arm that pushes up the window, until you get back.

If you have a sunroof and use it, I would clean the linkages and lube them with white lithium grease. They get gritty from atmospheric crud and can bind and break. On a long trip that could be disastrous if it locks open. While you're in there, you might run a length of insulated 12 gauge single strand wire—end crimped over— down the drain tubes to make sure they're clear. Likewise, make sure the drain tubes on either side of your cowling are clear of debris.

I drained and filled the manual trans with Amsoil; flushed the radiator and filler bottle which were very cruddy and filled with the antifreeze in the brown jug; and changed the oil and filter, using full synthetic.

Also replaced the front pads and rotors and added some new Pirelli's.

So some things to check.

The '96 car ran like a dream and I never opened the parts tub.

When I'm about to go on a trip that is more than 500 miles I check fluid levels, fill'er up, and put it in drive. Keep your car up and you won't have to rebuild the thing just to hit the road.

On several occasions I put more than 4,000 miles on my car with 2 weeks. Once in my 740 GLE I put 4,000 miles on the car in 4 days. LR - Alb - LR - Pitts - LR. Then in my yellow sedan I was going back and forth to Charlotte from Little Rock within weeks.

Half a dozen small plastic grocery bags (policing trash).
If it's early spring, sleeping bags.

The A&W's in BC and the Yukon have MUCH better
food than the ones in the US. And drive-thrus...
They're connected with a different chicken place, too.
Much better chicken strips than KFC. Good road food.

98 V70 398,000 miles

Starter list....
Change your timing belt before you leave as well as have your garage check the brakes and also check drive train for any leaks of any kind. check to make sure your service tools are all there, jack, lug wrench, pliers, reg and fillips screw drivers, small metric socket set.
Spare ignition module, about $25 bucks at salvage yard.
Mass air flow sensor also about $25 bucks at salvage yard.
1 gallon of premixed anti freeze.
2 quarts of oil.
full size spare tire as well as the donut , forget the fix a flat, it just ruins your rims and does absolutely no good for a blow out!
bottle of windshield washer fluid.
a flashlight with spare batteries and bulb
a good blanket and pillow for those unexpected rest stops
Comfort items.... I prefer Mountain Dew and Strawberry Twizzlers lol
