2002 V70xc tranny
Re: 2002 V70xc tranny
Great, thanks for the info. I got 12 litres so that is more than 12 1/2 quarts. BTW, I am not going to do a flush, just a drain and fill. I plan to to it twice over a weekend. So that should only use about eight quarts total, right?
You will use about 6.5 to 7 litres with 3 drain and fills.
"If" my memory is correct you will use 3.4 litres per drain and fill..

You usually use about 3.5 quarts per drain and fill.
You will need at least 3, sometimes 4 drain and fills (if very dirty) to get the fluid completely clean
After that you still need to go either to Volvo or someone with a VIDA-DICE set up and reset the adaptions, the fluid counters and do a new proper drive cycle
This is IMPORTANT (all of it). You have to do this, or to a degree your effort will be wasted!

Mick,
My 2001 had same symptoms as yours. Here is all that I did since 20,000miles ago:
* replaced B4 servo
* drain & fill 3 times( Toyota fluid Type IV )
* reset fluid counter via VIDA(chinese knock off from eBay/Alibaba)
* Magnefine trans oil filter
It's better than before. It still does jerk occasionally when transmission is hot(lot of stop and go driving). But I don't see this getting worse. Keep in mind this transmission is used in millions of other vehicles including the high power 300hp Volvo variants.
Things to do in my list:
1. install trans oil cooler(by pass radiator cooler) in addition to the Magnefine filter
2. replace the shifting solenoids( 3 mounted on the valve body )
#2 is more ambitious so I need to work myself up to it. The oil cooler will be done on next available opportunity.

Tonyx,
The linear solenoids are not that difficult to do. It is quite a bit of work and takes time, but none of it is really difficult. The trickiest part, in my experience, is getting the valve body cover back on without getting RTV everywhere.
I think this is more likely to improve your shifting issues than the cooler and filter.

A Simple D&F procedure would have a better chance of close-to-accurate fluid account once the fluid is measured correctly, engine HOT and IDLING, before the first drain.

Matt, did you change your solenoids? What was the outcome? I searched on your past posts but it wasn't clear whether you went ahead or not. Thanks.MattHenning wrote:Tonyx,

BTW, the Magnefine filter is already on the car. I think it helped, but it's subjective conclusion.

I did replace the solenoids. The problem I was experiencing was the transmission going into limp mode after driving for a short distance... sometimes longer. I should have waited to do the solenoids until after I got the VIDA/DiCE. The solenoids did not solve the problem. After connecting VIDA, I found that the problem was the transmission input speed sensor.

MattHenning wrote:Do the B4 servo cover replacement. It's around $30 and not that hard to do. If it doesn't help, at least you're only out $30. The 2-3 shift flare is a symptom of the B4 cover problem. Do the drain and fill. It will cost more than the servo cover, but it is the next least expensive step. I guess I've just repeated what Tonyx has posted. If you are interested in fixing this, these would be the first two steps. If these do not help, you'll need to take a step back and decide if you want to spend significant money on repairs that may be too late.
B4 Servo bulletin is specific to tranny serial 01C and 01L. I am curious as to what s OP's?
