1995 850GLT sedan- Car Cover and Drill?

Havent you noticed "the sticky effect" on Volvo radio faces, ECC's, and window switches, It is some no slip surface when its new, then it deteriorates and looks like your surfaces are covered in sticky dirt.

I would have noticed if it happend. Absolutely none of my plastics in my Volvo have been affected, just my drill! My radio face has been fine and everything is perfect, just it was bought in 1995.

I love this car, and I don't see myself selling it. I wonder how those newer Chinese Volvos are doing??

The only 4 things off the top of my head I would change are the following.

1. Driver side windshield washer spring tension is too strong for the arm, so over time it bends liftin git from the glass! I'd need to search on the forum to get the correct arm to fix that from a later Volvo. I looked into it but my local junkyard is very small, and rarely has any.

2. Better intermittent wiper system (heard a part can be bought, or used to be able to be bought to fix that)

3. The rear trunk is heavy enough to chop off a cow's head and drops like rock. The newer design in the later years is much much safer!

4. The plastic "tray" that the leather covering of the stick shift is connected to is getting loose, so in warmer temperatures (like summer) when I shift it becomes loose and the leather covering lifts up and has to be snapped back in (pain in the rear!)

The sticky Volvo coating happens on the newer 70 series cars. LOL

I think what happened is, you got something on it that deteriorated the surface. It may not have surfaced the first day, but after time, it showed it's sticky head. Some kind of grease or something.

1. As for your wiper, some people install the passenger wiper from the S70's on that drivers side 850. I've done it a couple of times. This last time I found that the wiper is hitting my hood so I need to look into that.

2. You can get a wiper relay from a VW or buy one from iPd. Heck I have a spare if you'd like, pm me.

3. You can get new lifts if yours are not holding. If not, yes they do close hard if you let them.

4. Not sure what you are talking about here but they do sell new shift knobs.

Drill- I know it totally sounds it haha. Nothing spilled on it, I'm the only owner, trust me. I googled extensively and found several people had the same problem. Something either went wrong with that batch of plastic, or the chemicals used for it are just "old". It can happen, plastic doesn't last forever, that's for sure (I'm ready for metal parts again!).

3. New lifts..hmm I'll PM you there. I was told there was nothing I could do. My lifts aren't the same as the newer models at all. The trunk is a death trap hah.

Plastics have, well... plasticizers in them - chemicals that make hard plastic soft and pliable. If your drill has a soft grippy surface then it was loaded with plasticizers. The softer the plastic the more plasticizer. Sometimes, with certain plastics the plasticizers leach to the surface. That's probably what is making your drill sticky after being unused for years. In normal use it gets rubbed off before it accumulates enough to be sticky.

Try isopropyl alcohol to remove it - its often better than stronger solvents for plastic.

That's exactly what happened from what I gathered in an internet search. I used alcohol. I had not known regular use would minimize this, interesting.
