2001 S80 T6 Engine system service required

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Before this check earth and voltage supplies to all modules. Is the alternator producing too much AC voltage? ( yes I DO MEAN AC not DC) Measure this voltage with engine running.
I will work on checking grounds and voltages during the week and report back. It is original alternator, starter, O2 sensors. No CEL, no codes that a parts store reader will pick up, only the goofy message and warning triangle. If I was in it for the long run I would get the Vadis.

Disconnected battery, ground first. Cleaned battery terminals and cable clamps. Disconnected battery cable at CEM and cleaned terminals. Disconnected connectors under drivers seat and sprayed with contact cleaner (hey, I heard it worked for someone else :D ) Reconnected battery with key in position II. Started car, NO MESSAGE, let idle for for 1 minute for computer to set idle speed, shut off car. Restarted, still no message. Took for drive on highway, accellerating through gears to train computer, still no message. Next morning turn on key (do not turn over engine) after about 3 seconds message appears along with all codes set again EXCEPT the airbag SRS.

Next step will be to check voltages!

Finally got around to checking voltage this morning after car sat overnight.

Key in off position, volts at battery 12.36, volts at CEM 12.44

Key in on position (engine off) volts at battery 11.68, volts at CEM 11.8

Engine running volts at battery 14.4, volts at CEM 14.4

Battery is about a year old. I have had them go bad before but each time it was a definite fail, car would start one time and the next time would not. Car starts fine now, no signs of low battery!

Checked my Jetta, 12.4 volts key off, 12.2 volts key on (engine off) and 14.4 volts engine running.

Going to swap the battery with another known to be good and see what happens.

Okay, put in new battery; volts at CEM key off is 12.4, key on is 12.2.
Continued watching volt meter as engine was cranked, dropped to 9.6 volts. After engine started made a smooth, steady increase to 14.4 volts.

No initial warning message or light. Took for 20 mile drive, still no message. Left overnight, started next morning, no message for about 1 minute, then message and light came on.

Does anyone know on this car if the positive battery cable is one run from the batery to the CEM or is there a junction in there?

Hi Ha_smith

Its been while you are banging your head to find the problem. I hope my suggestion might help.

So far I can understand and faced similar problem, you starter motor might be short...check the voltage before connecting positive cable to starter motor and then check with connected with starter motor, if you find any difference your starter motor might be culprit.

Do update findings.

Without knowing the Volvo codes you're basically on a witch hunt.

The codes can be for very petty things as well. For example, my UEM had a code set because the map light was out.

As much as I hate to do it for the short time I am planning on keeping this car I am going to have to buy the Vadis.
I thought I was on to something when I saw the volts drop at the CEM from key off to key on but new battery didn't help.
I may pull the starter and have a look at it as it does pull the volts down a lot when the engine is cranking.
Anybody in central Texas with Vadis that might want to help check codes? :)

Have you checked break pedal pressure sensor?
If you have questions about Volvo firmware ask me. I may know an answer :)

Well, it is not the starter! Or the battery!

The system you require for this car is Vida with a Dice reader. Vadis was for older cars.
Current cars VW Transporter 2.5TDI, 2010 XC90 D5 R Design
