I found a link to the first time I described this problem and I thought it would be worthwhile to post a link here just for posterity:

The CEM arrived at Xemodex yesterday... and I realized that I requested service using the specs for a different volvo (I tend to get mine confused). Hopefully they'll get me straightened out.

Hank...please keep us informed.

Mod note....the Board owner makes the final call on protocols but generally one does not turn a community like this into pay for service. I appreciate your offer is generous and in good faith.

Please consider, as you see fit, a contribution to Board running costs.

@abscate-

Thanks for the feedback. I recognize the perils of turning a site into a "pay for advice" site, and I apologize if I clouded the water. My intent is to provide a token of appreciation. I did intend to edit the post to remove that text after establishing contact with the user that provided the most valuable help, but I guess there's a limit on my ability to edit a post. I would still like the opportunity to edit it (or have a mod edit it) to remove the referenced text.

I'm also very willing to split my initial offering between the user that provided support and the forum maintainer(s). I know the expense involved with maintaining a forum and would love to show my support. I intend to provide support by bitcoin - is that something we can work out?

(Also, I would be delighted to have some mod help cleaning up these extraneous conversations so the record of the problem and solution remain prominent in the thread)

Because this is already out in the wild, Hank, carry on. No harm done.

Anyone reading this please note this site makes no claims regarding Hank or his offer for help.

Abscate (thank you!) is doing the right thing here by alerting us all to this... if offers of money for help become routine, this site's Standard Operating Procedure changes, or in the very least takes on an additional definition. The premise of the site changes.

If I found myself in Hank's shoes, I'd Private Message other users who appear in the topic -- that way no nasty moderator/administrator interference .

But I wouldn't do the reverse, that is, offering unsolicited help for money via PM. That's likely to end in a terminated account.

Post edit window -- changed to 2 days. This I've been adjusting for years. It's currently historically very high. If any user PMs me to edit a post that falls outside this window, no problem! I don't mind a bit.

Hank, when this is all said and done let's make a Volvo repair database (VRD) entry from this -- without the extraneous BS written from the ground up in the VRD system.

I received the rebuilt CEM from Xemodex yesterday and installed it immediately. I've put about 50 miles on the car so far with no problems! I'm VERY optimistic. I would look for about 3 weeks of problem-free Spring/Summer driving to call this a definite success. Here's some video:

It's a sad day. I installed the replacement CEM from Xemodex ($572), and was VERY optimistic that the problem that had been following me for four years was finally solved forever. I was wrong. The DIM went down again today. I did not notice any audible click this time, I was driving at 55mph and looked down to see that the display had stopped responding and the ABS & Brake lights were on. There was no change in the handling of the car today. When I restarted everything returned to normal.

The problem reappeared after 156 miles after replacing the DIM.

I'm eager for new suggestions. I am relatively certain that the video I posted earlier ( is the same problem I'm having, but I haven't heard from him.

Here is today's incident:

UPDATE:

I'm absolutely sure that the problem has something overheating under the dash. The car is 99% functional now after I removed the plastic barrier under the dash on the driver side (two hex screws, it's the part above the gas and brake pedal) and we run the air conditioner on the floor board when it's above 85 degrees outside. I have driven about a thousand miles in summer weather without difficulty in the past month. We left the car in the driveway at 95 degrees yesterday and it did act up, but I turned it off and started the air conditioner the next time I turned it on and it did fine.

So.. this doesn't solve it perfectly, but the car is 100% drivable now. I know for sure that rebuilding the CEM and replacing 12 relays on the CEM did NOT solve the problem for me, but the contributions from this forum helped me isolate the problem to a heat issue under the driver side dash.

I'll provide updates if anything changes and I hope you'll do the same.

I would take a look at your rebuilt CEM.
Because under dash there is only 2 modules CEM & SAS. SAS is for wheel angle sensor and only for cars with DSTC.
If you have questions about Volvo firmware ask me. I may know an answer :)

Maybe XeMODEX can tell you what gets rebuilt on these units. I doubt every relay gets replaced at that price. Just for reference his much is a new unit from Volvo plus installation?
