If you have valve ticking with low weight oil the ticking will go away with heavier weight oil.

Also if the engine burn some oil between changes,heavier weight oil will improve things.The engine will reduce,if not completelly stop,to burn oil.

ah, we're talking about ticking that doesn't go away, not just at startup. my mistake.

incidentally, am i right about the lighter oils for startup ticks? ie, if i were ticking with a 10W, might i not tick with a 5W?

Many people remedy the ticking by going to heavier weights, I think you're saying it backwards? So, if it ticks with 10w, the ticking will be worse with 5w.
