Ticking noise coming from lifter on 99 s70 t5
, I'm getting a ticking noise that is always there and gets faster as I raise the throttle. It almost sounds like a jackhammer kind of noise but muffled I'm pretty sure that it is a lifter and want to know the process of changing the lifter. does the whole head have to come off or can it be done just by removing the cams and putting a new lifter in. any input would be much appreciated and. I've already done a oil flush and change with 15 40 and Lucas oil treatment and it still sounds as it did before the oil change

Sounds like a Jackhammer or Sewing Machine?
Jackhammer would be like a rod knocking, collapsed lifters sound like a sewing machine.
Confirm you have enough oil pressure before you start on the valve train. Low oil pressure can create these symptoms also. Idiot lights are not 100% reliable.

...And welcome to MVS. =)

There will be other comments to consider, but if it's really a lifter and these are the hydraulic type, assuming it's sticking because of some oil sludge inside, you may try some Sea Foam before going to pull the head: pour 1-2 cans in the sump, run the engine from cold for 10-15 seconds so oil gets into the tappets, shut the engine and let the car rest several days then change the oil (by all means don't drive the car during this time with such amount of Sea Foam). A small chance the detergent will free a little the tapped. On the other side, this may free crude inside the engine and block the suction pipe mesh.

If I where going try an aggressive dose of Seafoam in to unstick lifters, I would let the engine run for 5 minutes to insure the Seafoam gets to the top end and there is some penetration of the Seafoam into the lifters. Thereafter run for 5 minutes every hour because the fluids are going to keep draining back to the sump. If the Seafoam does not penetrate the lifters, it cannot do the lifters any good.

15W40 is too thick for your climate, 0W30 would be a much better choice. Lucas oil treatment doesn't clean very well. Seafoam is a much better cleaner, just follow the directions on the can and let the engine idle for a few minutes every hour or so. Let it sit overnight, run again in the morning a couple of more times and then flush the oil and replace the filter.
If it still ticks when warm, go to a garage and have the pressure checked. It is possible that the problem is in the oil sump, clogged pick up tube screen, bad O rings.
I would never try to replace a lifter, much too expensive and time consuming.

If I had a larger garage, I could have more Volvos.
