Local "foreign indie" shop wants $465 for the timing belt...makes me want to do it myself if possible...

It's not the belt that breaks its the idlers that do. Belts rarely actually break themselves so looking at the belt and saying it's OK isn't a good inspection. You need verification that the idler and tensioner were replaced. Under 500 bucks really isn't that bad of a price. If they do the water pump idler and tensioner
