New V70 owner maintenance schedule

Post by IslandV70 »

I just got a 2005 V70 2.4 with 58,000 miles
Here is what has been done so far besides oil changes and so on:
Tranny flush at 32,400.
New timing belt at 56,000 10/17.
Tires and battery are almost new, the brakes where done at 38K. Long ago I had a 740 Turbo that routinely warped brake rotors, I am hoping to not repeat that issue!
I assume the timing belt should be good for some time to come. I am guessing it got replaced because it timed out. Should I keep to the 30,000 miles between transmission service. I know the theory that the tranny will quit soon after being flushed, but maybe this does not apply if done on a good schedule?
Also for oil changes, I am thinking to use the European long life spec synthetic Mobil 1 (10w40 IIRC). I used that in my old BMW wagon and never had issues and the engine still ran great past 200,000 miles.

That is low mileage, but it is also now 13 years old. Great to have had the timing belt done, and the ATF change at half the mileage.

Given the ATF is newer than 13 years old, I would feel confident in doing an ATF change. Either drain from ATF drain plug and refill with same quantity or use the Gibbons method. The drain and fill can be repeated a few times preferably with shifting between gears (a few seconds in each gear, or a short drive between changes) or at the next few oil changes. You can also do the Gibbons method via the ATF radiator hose. Use search (or check the ATF kit instructions at IPD).

I have used Toyota type 4 ATF - a Mobil ATF 3309 spec is recommended, although there are now reports of good results from some other ATFs. I personally think that the transmission manufacturer (Aisin Japan) uses Idemitsu 3309, as Aisin does not make the fluid itself and Idemitsu is the significant Japanese ATF manufacturer. Aisin provides transmissions to Toyota as well as Volvo.

I used Mobil 1 oil for many years and it is fine, but I am trying Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w40 for my latest oil change to see if there is any difference that I can note. None yet noted.

At this age, it is important to check that the PCV is still good. Put a rubber glove over the oil filler hole and start the engine - the glove should be sucked towards the engine. The grid underneath stops it going in. If it inflates then the PCV system is blocked and needs attention to avoid over pressurizing the engine and risking blowing engine seals, and leaking oil.
