Re: 2005 XC70 - Convert to FWD
If that's the case you won't have any trouble with using the RHS axle.

Here's a couple pics of the shaft installed without bevel gearbox. The picture shows a couple hose clamps used as insurance in case the sleeve wanders. It was jammed tight in the gearbox, so I just left it be rather than remove it to R&R the seals. If seals leak, then I'll be forced to revisit the area.
What's the thoughts on the oil at the bottom of the turbo? PCV system maintenance required? I'm planning a big "stage zero" soon, and that's one of the main areas of concern, along with timing belt.

All is good. No codes have been set so far, in the first 50 km at least! The older V70 is being retired this weekend, so the XC70 will take over daily driver duties on Monday. My initial concern was codes being set that would prevent the car from passing emissions and/or safety check. There were no issues on that front, and the car is now registered.

Sorry, just tripped over this old thread now. I ended up eventually sourcing a replacement bevel gearbox, and getting the AWD system functioning properly again. I ran the car in 2wd mode for several months though, with no issues other than obvious lack of AWD. Given our Canadian winters, it's very nice to have it functional though!

Renns, I concur. I just had my 2005 XC70 apart and the RH front shaft is driven from the inside of the transmission by the splines on the end of the shaft. It slides right through the angle gear shaft with no mechanical connection to it. I will unfortunately have mine apart again real soon so I can double check in case I'm remembering this wrong. viewtopic.php?f=9&t=91078&p=522262#p522262renns wrote: ↑31 Mar 2016, 11:09
I don't think this is true. The RHS driveshaft I removed from my '05 XC passes right through the bevel gearbox, engaging in the transmission in the same fashion as my old '98 V70 AWD. I'm going to stick that driveshaft back into place tonight when I get a chance to reassemble the car. I'll add some pics later to further document this process.

Jar240, read over Greg's thread, which I think he linked. I'd just replace the DEM pump if you are positive that's what's failed on yours. It really doesn't make sense to remove your bevel gear & driveshaft just to eliminate your RWD over a $290 pump.
Greg, I keep thinking about your situation & I keep coming back to the DEM pump as a possibility. I'd absolutely rule that out before you take a shot at welding your BG to your collar sleeve. Me thinks there's not a whole lot of room for error with that undertaking.
Have you removed the BG again since you replaced the sleeve for round 2 inspection?
On the driveshaft/rear cv joint removal topic -
I've actually been contemplating making 90 or 45-degree M6/8 grease zerk I can fit into the rear of the oscillation damper. Pump grease in a couple holes, drive around a while, pull bolts, see if it'll budge, if not, drive around (close to home!) with bolts removed etc.. a lot like trying to get a seized dually inner wheel unseized from the hub. Maybe leave 2 of the bolts just backed out a couple turns for safety type deal.
I've only really had a struggle with removing 2 rear CV's from the oscillation damper. But going forward I'm thinking I'll force grease into the oscillation damper flange a week or two prior to attempting disassembly on known stubborn subjects.

Other things are breaking faster than I can fix them right now, so round 2 inspection has to wait because I can't tie up the lift that long. If I get it apart and the collar splines are damaged like I suspect they are I won't have a choice but to weld it. The good news is the job falls into the easy category for my neighbor's shop, I already showed it to him along with the utube video of one being done and he thinks he has a way to improve on what others have done.
