When I buy parts, I try to buy the bestest and mostest upgraded quality for longevity and reliability... within reason, of course. If the "bestest and mostest upgraded" parts take me to a part life that is 30 or 40 years down the road, I'll back off a tad, unless it's really a small cost difference.

At the same time, though, If I CAN build the part myself for half the money (or get twice the life for the same money), as in just shaping/fabbing metals or plastics, then I will certainly make an attempt, even if it's not as pretty, UNLESS I just cannot afford the time for self-manufacture or vehicle downtime. All in all, I love building practical stuff with atypical supplies!

That said, I consider myself to be a complete oxymoron -- an "out-of-the-box extravagant cheapskate"!
