After several searches for a vacuum leak with no results, i found it.
The hose from the top of the oil trap to the intake of the turbo had come off at the turbo intake hose. It is down in an area where it is hard to see and it initially did not look like it was off. Fixed it and things are now much better.

It is interesting that this caused a report of rich condition. Usually you get a P0171 when you get a vacuum leak, but the way to really nail this down is to look at the fuel trims values.
