exhaust fumes/smell from coolant reservoir

yup, comp. test came out dead even. i concur, i have the evidence. commence head gasket replacement. anyone any experience with this kit?

and: is there a sure way to find out whether it's a blown gasket or a cracked head? the internet gives me contradicting answers.

With respect to the kit, we recommend only Volvo OEM for the valve stem seals and Volvo or Corteco only for the seals. I ordered my OEM rebuild parts through Tasca Volvo.

When you get the head off, have a machine shop check it for flatness and cracks.

This is enough of a job where you don't want to skimp on parts or bypass the machine shop.

I agree 100 percent, great points about the parts source. I would also be careful about the brand of the head gasket.

Note that you can buy the valve stem seals in a 24-pack for like 70 or 80 bucks, search this forum for the part number.
