Re: Red Dashboard connector
I think Lee is saying to pull a tab on the end of the BLACK plate the RED and WHITE plugs seat into. The black plate equals the Left hand drive YELLOW plate.
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Hi.
the black plate is a metal plate that is held to the inside of the car by two 8mm bolts that are impossible to get to without the dash removed. Thats on the right-hand side of my photo.
Then its flat with the white and red connectors fitted into it.
Then its got a right-angle fold on the left-hand side of my photo to give it some strength. No part of it is separate or moves. Its simply a mounting plate with two rectangle holes cut through it for the two connectors.
I'm sorry. I'm not trying to be difficult and I'm desperate for help. But I don't see the mounting plate has any release for the connectors. I cannot even get to the upper side of it. I have pushed and pulled the red connector around in its rectangle hole in the hope it might release and drop down and then I can see it better, but the red connector doesn't budge. Its firmly into the black plate, and the plugs/wires are firmly into it on the underside as per my photo.
There must be a trick to it for sure. But I cannot find it. I'm hoping someone who's come across it before will reply with the solution.

pretty sure this is different than the yellow one with the purple handle. If you look at the white connector there seems to be a black tab that secures the white connector (just left of the wires going to the red one). i would guess the same kind of tab is on the red connector as well. I really doubt a harness this big has no tab or sthg.

Finally figured it out.
Its not like any plug described here.
Near the end of the red connector facing the front of the car, at the end where the black mounting plate has its folded edge, there can be seen two small black plastic tangs (one on each side of the connector) coming through the black mounting plate from above. Not the square ones at the ends of the connector in the photo, but along the side of the connector.
Each tang is squeezed and pushed upwards at the same time until they release and are pushed above the black mounting plate.
Then reaching around the folded end of the black mounting plate, the black plastic tangs can be felt to be part of a cradle which needs to be swung in an arc towards the front of the car. It pivots on the two square tangs that can be seen in the first photo. You need long and preferably skinny fingers.
At some point while tugging on the cables, the red connector will pop apart at that end, and then the other end towards the back of the car can be disengaged from that end of the connector the traditional way of sliding it out from under its retaining bar.

Well done!SS2115 wrote: ↑02 Apr 2017, 03:27 I'm removing my 850 dashboard to replace the evaporator.
How do I release the large Red electrical connector please? In the instructions I have its described as a "Zero Force Connector" but I'm dammed if i can find how to open or part it.
Its the only thing I have left to do before removing the dashboard from the car.
Hope someone can describe or photo it for me.
