I'm pretty sure it was a new part, had Volvo p/n stickers on it and they certainly charged me for a new one at $2K!
They had the car since Wed, 18 Aug. I brought it in to them last month for the same problem and they had it for an entire week and said they could not replicate the problem. At least this time, they said they were able to replicate the problem but still investigating the exact cause. Let's see...

2K? I'd be a little wary of those guys...configsys wrote: ↑20 Apr 2018, 09:13 I'm pretty sure it was a new part, had Volvo p/n stickers on it and they certainly charged me for a new one at $2K!

Colorado Driveshaft will rebuild for about a
quarter of that. Sure, you have to pay some
freight, but you should still come in at under
a grand, including labor!
Heck - You're in SLC. You could hit the road
and drive it right to'em. Make it an advanture!

I'll keep that in mind. I'll wait and see what they say on Monday after they remove the driveshaft and tell me what the problem is. Thanks for the advice!

Picked up the car yesterday and they replaced the driveshaft again under warranty. I'm glad they stood by their ethics and workmanship.

Still strange it failed so quickly. Did they say what was wrong with it? Volvo warrants parts for 1 year if you don't have them fit it, but for life if they do.

They mentioned one of the joints failed and is not repairable since the driveshaft is replaced as an entire unit. I didn't ask more questions because I was still in shock they weren't charging me anything;-)

They are repairable by Colorado Driveshaft, but that is not now your concern. Glad they stood up for their work, but still worrying it failed so quickly. You have to cut the middle of the shaft to fit a new support bearing and doughnut. Problem may well have been the shaft has been sitting in the Volvo stock pile for 18 years and the rubber has deteriorated in storage. So watch the new one as it may be the same! If it fails again get Colorado driveshaft to fix it as hopefully the parts they are using are newer.

Sooo... looking at all this, and wondering if it's a worthwhile investment. The Falcon came to me with the rear driveshaft already out, told I need to send it to CO for a rebuild, and the hardware bagged&tagged.
It noticeably slithers around in the snow as a FWD (but after 20-ish years of Subarus I may be spoiled a bit). Is this a worthy bit of spending ahead of other things both known and as anticipated (with it's 20th birthday in October and just creasing 190K)?
