We used to have a 2013 2.4. Great car. It only had a couple small issues here and there. The radio cut out every now and again and the transmission temp sensor went out, but that was fixed under warranty.PeteB wrote: ↑15 Aug 2017, 07:45 I see on the 2009, I have a 2011 Sonata that has also been very reliable but there is
a recall on the motor for possible rod bearing failure. No problem with that year.
Ours is also 4 cyl non-turbo and I can't get over the performance, mileage, etc. it
is amazing. 195 HP for a 2.4 liter 4 cyl.
Great car.
I'm still active on the Hyundai forums though (my mom still has a 2013 Elantra) and there have definitely been many, many issues with this recall.
I think it's because of the GDI and rings that aren't designed for it. Fuel blows by the weak rings, thins the oil, and there go the bearings. It's unfortunate that Hyundai didn't prepare the whole engine for direct injection instead of essentially threading new injectors into the old MPI Theta 4 cylinder from the last Sonata. They're great cars otherwise. Pretty quick off the line for 190 hp in the PZEV model we had. Still not as quick as my GLT
