Not sure how air gets into the brake lines from the check valve. It is pressure operated from the manifold and works on supplying pressure to the booster diaphragm to help reduce the pedal pressure. when it starts to fail you get the harder pedal like you have no boost support and you have to use both feet on the pedal even from backing up speeds. Mine started doing this initially and then worked fine in regular driving. Swapped it out and it returned to normal.
