1993 850 Help! Electronic Climate Control

Yes, I have ECC. Variable fan speed, an Auto setting and temperature for each side with numbers. Electronic fan controller with a MOSFET, not a resistor pack. The replacement controller is the same part number as the one I took out: 9144354. The ad said the replacement was for 93-95 Volvo 850.

This weekend I took the climate control module out of the dash, took the lid off and started investigating. One of the harnesses when unplugged from the dash module makes the LED go out on the under-hood diagnostics. I have voltage both sides of all the fuses, at the fan, and at the fan controller, but no voltage going into the voltage regulator in the dash module... so now I have to start tracing wires using the schematic.

I just got done wiring in a hard switch in place of the fan controller. Fortunately the system defaults to the defrost. Unfortunately it doesn't default to heat. :(

no voltage going into the voltage regulator in the dash module.

Voltage regulator? Don't see one on the schematic. Do you mean no voltage to the ECC at A1 (Yellow/Violet)?

Yes, probably. I haven't traced the circuit components back to the wiring harness yet. The voltage regulator is inside the dash module. On that circuit board, I found a 7805 regulator, found by observation not the schematic, the details of what's inside aren't on the schematic. On the schematic, this dash module is labeled "ECC Control Module" on top left of page 39. Even though the link is for model year 1995, not a 1993, it looks like its probably the same as my car.

Ignition switch on? Power to the fan control module and fan are always on. Power to the ECC is switched.

9144354 is not a ECC part number. 9144354 is the part number for one of the Heater Fan Power Modules, there are two versions of Heater Fan Power Modules, which is located under the dash. It is the current limiter that controls the heater fan speed.

From what I'm seeing the ECC and the Heater Fan power module and ECC need to be matched. Any other numbers on the ECC?

Can you take a picture of the label on the ECC and attach it to your next posting?

Yes, Ignition is on.

Yes, the fan control module (heater fan power module) #9144354 is what I purchased, because my initial research showed that if the fan went bad it often took the fan controller with it, usually the MOSFET inside. I checked it and it was OK, but tried the replacement part anyway.

The dash module (the main climate control) is stock. Numbers on it are:
Imprinted into the top of the metal housing: Volvo 4970 ALPS JAPAN
On the stickers: 6847529 and W304K

The original fan controller part is:
Volvo 9144354 and 4970 ALPS JAPAN molded into the housing, and
stickers say: 00B26752 and W212V.

The replacement fan controller says:
Volvo 9144354 and 4970 ALPS JAPAN molded into the housing, and
stickers say: 99A65990 and W444

The online auto parts stores only list two fan controllers, one for models above or below a certain chassis number, which matched the 9144354 number from my old fan controller.

According to the chart in the link, my car would fall into line #3 in the top part of the chart:
1993 Week 01 ECC Control module 6847529-1 Fahrenheit
Line 3 on the bottom part of the charts has an X for being able to run with Left-hand drive 9144354.

And lastly, I just opened up the dash ECC module, and took out the circuit boards -- smoke from some of the componenets, a burned up PCB trace and a big diode that got so hot it desoldered itself.

I guess I'm off to ebay to find a replacement climate control module.

That chart should come in handy. :)

You need to stay version five or lower. The "D+ supply added" in version 6 was a two part ECO. One part was ECC changes and the other part was wiring harness changes.

If you go with version six+ and no upgraded harness, the engine cooling fan will not come on.

I don't have the wiring schematic to figure out what the harness changes are. I do have the information on which harness where changed. If you cannot locate a version 2-5 ECC. You might be able to get the upgraded harness from a 94 or 95.
