Re: possible MAF sensor problem?

Post by azureblue »

When I did the PCV job a few months ago, I replaced the hoses under the intake manifold. I rechecked my clamps etc. and they all look secure. The only doubtful hoses that I can see are the three boost control hoses. Those are oxidized but still solid. I'm going to hit the parts yard today - co-incidentally, on my way back from Wake Forest Baptist. Maybe we stopped at the same Advance - the one on University, next to the paint store...

And I hope I will have time to diagnose and fix the car today..

Another question - since the CEL light is on, will it go away when i replace the MAF sensor?

PS I have VIDA and the odb2 cable, but only an XP pro laptop. I am told I can't run the diagnostic software on XP pro. True?

Or else find a copy (ahem) of 7 and put it on my Macbook pro..

I'm going from memory, but when I replaced my MAF sensor, the CEL light did not go away. I recall I had to clear the code 1st with my code reader.

If I'm not mistaken, I also disconnected the battery before replacing the MAF. I do this before replacing any electrical component. Of course, when you disconnect the battery, after repair, you need to follow the "battery reconnect procedure" so that your key fobs and door locks work properly.

I went to the parts yard and all 2002 turbos have 218 088 MAFs. I did a bit of cross referencing, and my 2001 was listed as using the same MAF as a 2002 turbo. Remembering the PO of my car's workmanship, he could have put in the wrong MAF. I checked my car's MAF and it was a 218 045. And the sensors didn't look the same, either. So I put in the 088 and the car started right up.. Maybe this was the problem, although I can't see how the car could have run this long without throwing a code...

The ECU requires multiple cycles to clear a code once set. Disconnecting the battery should reset it, though.

finally, the 088 MAF seems to have fixed the problem. But as a bit of education, I see there are two, maybe more Bosch MAFs that will fit - what's the difference?

Don't ask...it works! No seriously, both the original ...108, and replacement 088 work on the 2001 T5. Obviously, the 045 didn't even though it physically fit. It may be that the 108 and 088 use the same sensor, and the 045 is different. I disassembled my extra 088 MAF, and the actual sensor PN is Bosch F 00C 262 064. I'll bet its the same sensor in the 108, but a different PN in your 045. If you have a T20 torx plus bit, you can remove the sensor and confirm it's PN.

Just glad you are up and running and it's always good to know you have options (multiple PN's) when replacing the MAF.
