Yeah- that is pointing back to the 5V reference part of the ECU

Ugly. We don't have a lot of troubleshooting info inside that box.

As far as the trans, I suspect the symptoms "-" on the dim with hard engagement may be part of limp mode when a major problem in engine management is detected. I've never seen a full pinout of the TCM connector. I wouldn't be surprised if the +5v VREF generated by the ECM is also fed to the TCM on another pin or that the trans goes into limp mode when certain DTCs are present on the ECM.

It wouldn't hurt to trace the wires in that bundle to see if any of them connect into the trans. If none of them do the TCM is likely ok.

That’s a good idea. Thanks again. This is a pretty large bump in the road, but this has otherwise been a great car. I am hoping to get it back on its feet soon.

I checked my Alldata on my 2005 and it has pretty detailed pinouts on the ECM - enough to give you the data on where the 5V to the throttle assembly is etc.

That info is out there, my 2005 is different than your 2004 though.

If you are stuck, I could add a sub to the 2004 and send you the login - does cost $20 for one year, $40 for 5 years.

Hello again. I've already pulled the ECM and am preparing to send it in to have it repaired. If it doesn't clear all the issues, when I get it back, I will send in the TCM as well.

It is very kind of you to offer to help me with your AllData account. It is appreciated. At this point, I feel fairly certain that the problem must be with the ECM and possibly, the TCM. We will see, I guess.

I'll post later and let folks know how this plays out, in the hope that it will be of use to others, down the road. It has been a frustration that so little info has been available online that was on-point for the issues I have been dealing with. I guess I have a knack for breaking things in unique and unexpected ways. :mrgreen:

I'm impressed with all you guys and this complicated diagnosis. Where does one send an ECU for repair, and where do they start?

My wife and I have torn enough plastic valances / spoilers / bumper covers off on parking blocks that we're very wary of them.

Hello. There are a number of companies that sell re-manufactured ECMs, TCM and other modules and/or repair them. Below are three such companies I have found so far. Xemodex is the best regarded, as far as I can tell. AES Modules is the least expensive of the three.

As for where the companies start, I am sure they all have electronic systems that interface with the control modules and check them thoroughly. They also take into account the symptoms and other info that the customer reports to them. Then, I imagine they have a lot of experience in this area and have a lot of knowledge concerning the sorts of problems endemic to various manufacturers' control modules. A company that offers a lifetime guarantee on a repair must be pretty confident in their work. Even so, going this route is not a sure thing. The money to be saved potentially is quite an incentive to take a chance though, for me at least.
