the wheel bearing is best check with the axle removed from the hub. then turn by hand to feel the bearing.

do you have your mother-in-law in the car?

No, I haven't tried that, but I was thinking about it today. In fact, I was going to jack the car up and look to see if there was a way I could get some gear oil or grease into the bearing, but it was raining so hard I decided against it for the time being.
