ignition leads fitted
hi all well as reward for passing the mot today i fitted a new set of lucas ignition leads and then took the car for a good long run and she seems happier for them, the set i took of had been exposed to lots of engine oil and code date from 2003 so well needed though the car still has a misfire when pulling away and sometimes when changing gear it hesitates a little, then goes off like a rocket.
i have not yet changed the fuel filter and the one fitted looks ancient so maybe that will fix the misfire but i doubt it,properly gapped ngk plugs, new bosch dizzy cap and rotor arm,and now new leads am i missing something and do coils on these cause misfire?any advice welcome, peace

Problem is Lucas(read aftermarket) ignition leads.
These cars will ONLY run properly on Bougicord(oem) leads.
Even Bosch leads won't last long.

hi misha i have had very small funds for this car due to circumstances atm so had to be economic and just tried to go for the midprice range and with makes i know worked back in the 80s-90s when i was fulltime mechanic idk how much they have changed in the years since but lucas products have been oe on millions of british cars and rarely gave warantee faults it was only when we had to buy intermotor instead, then there stuff went down hill in quality but then lucas made all there own parts in house god knows where there made now.
but tbh there well put together 7mm silicon double walled and come with all the retaining clips and a 3 year guarantee.
i shall likely be visiting the local breakers soon looking for a decent used power steering pump and shall have a hunt for any decent lead sets being as ive known and worked for them i get to dig around and find the best bits before they destroy them also on the hunt for a set of rear bumper brackets.
also now she has new mot i am going to tackle the one rusty patch on the left lower part of the wheelarch where it meets the sill so i need to find the paint code and get some made in aerosol as ive no compressor here have you or anyone reading an idea which of these numbers is the paint code?

hi all well i got brave enough now she is through the mot test and removed the plastic sillcover from the passenger side n/s/r and had a good clean up and have exposed pretty much what i expected and the start of systemic rust so i have now to cut out and make the plates for the hole and its got lovely metal around to weld to easy and if treated careful now the rust will be stopped in its tracks as this is the only rusty bits on the whole car if you dont count the non structural back bumper mounts which are next on list after this welding and filling bit,the wheelarch bit is surface rust only and has some filler in there but not loads so a rust treatment and skim of filler will be fine just the under sill cover bit to weld, for now!
i took a few pics of what i found, could have been a lot worse!

418 is your paint code, and the -11 is the manufacturer and type, so you have regent red, BASF, metallic

hi i shall chop out all the affected metal and rust treat the inner sill with ziebart ime this stops the rust in its tracks, tbh i been pleasantly surprised after check in and behind every panel on the car compared to a british built car of same age would require far more welding, only bit that let these cars down imo was covering sills in plastic that traps moisture and using inferior quality metal and poor paint on bracket a shame not powder coated or even galvanised which is what i shall do with the rear bumper brackets send for powder coating then they will outlast the rest of the car, cheers

o my god!i must be very lucky with this car it is a shame when rust gets a grip on a nice car but ive spent the best part of 43 years restoring cars and have repaired some real horrors over the years,a nissan skyline you could pick grass through the holes in the floorpan, the front suspension had dismounted entirely from the top pillar i paid £30 for the car out of the auctions as a push through stuck a battery in it and drove it home! then spent the next few weeks outside my grans house with the welder and me and my bro shaped all the metal by hand with hammers and the kerb stone as an anvil,we drove that car for many years and many miles and it was still running the day i scrapped it due to the local law being upset by its lack of mot or tax!mind you i was a 16yr old kid then!
now im 56 and have copd so the welding bit will be done by my old boss at the last garage i worked for but is the only job on the whole car ive not done myself albeit slowly.
i bet you gained many more years and great satisfaction from our restore though?cheers

hi all well today i went and picked up and have fitted the new bosch fuel filter and took her out for a good run and once warmed up its loads better there was lots of traffic and stop starting which is when the misfire was most noticeable i think i can say i have it running as well as i can expect for a 26 yr old with 153000 on the clock!even the odometer works, rare or what?
also have her booked in for next week and get the welding done and in my shed i have an unopened 5ltr kit of ziebart rust treatment which i was lucky to grab before it got banned here due to some health and safety nonsense its the best ever product and used to cost masses of cash to have done,i shall get some pics up as work progresses, peace all and good driving
