I completely agree with this; my policy is to change a filter a) when I buy a used car to establish a baseline, b) every 100k after that. Gas quality nowadays is nothing like the past. I cut open a Volvo filter off the used P80 I bought not too long ago. It turns out it had been on about 8 years/50k miles once the date code on it was decoded (date matched t-belt job change so I could guess at miles.

I posted it at BITOG since there are more "filter heads" there, but here's what I found when I cut it open, quite nicely doing it's job.

Its the same fuel filter than on Ford Escorts (94 year model European).

.. should have i said that?
