I would guess that car has been in a coastal area and salt spray/air has done the nasty deed. If you look, there are likely holes in the bottom of fenders and floor. Sorry you did not get a good one.

Because of the windshield rust? What would it cost to properly fix that? I hate the thought that a small spot of rust would kill an otherwise functional car and wish there were shops which would fix it.

That entire A-pillar looks rotted out. Even down at the bottom. It's not a "small spot of rust". Unless you can/want to do all of the proper work yourself, it's going to cost more than buying another car.
Seeing as it's a manual, it's worth a parts car for a manual swap into a turbo car.

Rust is the bane of these. They last a hell of a lot better than other cars from a similar year but its still bad. I got to do a rust clean on one of the project cars up north, fearing a similar fate to this car but hopefully not nearly as bad. Was winter driven over one year.
I agree you got a ton of great parts from the car, however drive something that will stay safe and not have structural rust.
My rule of thumb is if a finger can go through then the integrity just isnt there.

As pictured, the hood has 1 spot of rust. I inspected the floor pan and wheel wells. No rust. The underbody and frame look good except the brackets holding on the rear bumper. Common issue on these. I possibly have an extra pair in spare closet. I took the car to auto glass shop. He told me that if the rest is not rusted then it would be the silicone material used to seal the windshield. He says the black silicone used on the windshield looks to be a chemical that is known to be destructive on paint. His words not mine. The chemical that he uses starts with a U I think.

I can't see why that can't be repaired. I don't think it is too bad. I would suggest the issue has been caused by a leaking windshield that has been left for a long time. The hardest part is that at that point the A-pillar and windshield top is a multilayered section of steel. It will require the windshield being removed to repair. A good welder would be able to cut that top layer out, and make a patch. It may not end u being pretty but that depends on the welder/body guy.

I will see about finding a welder.
Edit: scratch that. I have a welder. And a grinder.
