That makes sense, so I also saw that there is the potential for the blower to be "stuck" on full whether the car is running or not, does that have to deal with the same parts or is that different ones? i had that happen to me today, and after pulling the fuse and letting sit for a little bit started working normal again. Thoughts on that?

Yup, that'll be the resistor telling you it's on its last leg. With mine, it would run the fan full blast even when the key was removed!

Some will head to a junk yard for one, but it seems to me that these are parts that will eventually fail, so why chance it with something that may not work, or will fail soon? Head to FCP and get a new one - but do that after you check if you have the filter. Best to place one big order, you know?

Yes totally! I checked for the air filter and no luck there was not one built in so Ill order one when i get all those parts!

I was able to remove everything, and pulled the resistor out, and it looks like this one

now i also so a different one with climate control on there, can i upgrade to that or do i need to stay with the one listed above?

Upgrade? Maybe, but it'd probably be easier to upgrade an NA engine to a turbo! It's not just the resistor and the control panel. The back of the MCC has small rods controlling the vents where the ECC is all electronic in controlling the bits, so you'd have to remove the dash, seats, headliner and carpet to simply get at everything necessary - not to mention the need for a parts car to pull everything off of!

I have 165K on the 1998 S70 GLT...

In the cold morning, the blower motor makes a faint screeching noise for about 1-2 minutes. After that, it runs fine (quiet). My questions are:

1. Is it possible to lube the blower motor (of course it has to be removed from the car first)?
Maybe re-greasing the bearings etc. etc.

2. Or...NEW blower motor?
If so, what brand: Volvo vs xyz brand?

Thanks1

There was a recent thread with pictures in opening up the climate system fan motor and rinsing the carbon out of the blower, in the past month. I'll try to find it and link.

Snap, ping...covers removal and cleaning. Jim bee talks about working grease into the end cap bearings.

I bought a cheap thing off of eBay a few years ago and it worked, except its frame was slightly larger and prevented the glovebox from fitting properly. My solution was to notch the glovebox a bit.

I'd also check to see if you have a cabin air filter, mounted under the wiper motor cover (or whatever that thing is called). If you pull the blower, you'll be able to look up and see if it's there.

For some reason, Volvo didn't include the filter on some cars, which lets leaves and other detritus fall into the motor and exacerbate the wear & tear. If you're missing it, you'll also need to purchase a plastic mounting frame; I bought mine from FCP.

1997 850 MCC - Not fitted with ECC.
The blower fan is barley turing at settings 1, 2, and 3. But, it comes on loud with plenty of warm air on setting 4.

Last winter it made humming noise.
After reading several MVS post, I am thinking about replacing it with Behr.
Has anyone installed it with IPD's instruction Bench Preparing Heater Blower Motors http://www.ipdusa.com/techtips/10068/bench-preparing-heater-blower-motors?crumbs=T10069,P6194.

Thanks!

xHeart,

Did you try lubing it first?
I removed the blower, add a few drops of oil at the rear bushing and front (just under the squirrel cage).
All is quiet now.
