Ah ha. So it appears I am on 32 bit. Only problem now is that I cannot select 64 bit, there are only 32 bit system options. Do you know how I could change that system to Windows 7 64-bit?ericy wrote:My guess is that your VirtualBox configuration of the VM isn't quite correct. I have mine working fine in VirtualBox, so I can go through the settings that I do have.bmdubya1198 wrote: Hi,
I got all the files ready to go. I went to start the VM, and it goes into a loop of booting Windows. It will show the VirtualBox boot screen, go the the "Windows is Loading Files" screen, then start over again. How do I fix that to get into the system?
I lowered the memory to 3.1GB because it would not run with the full amount due to the installed memory on my laptop. I don't think that would have an effect, though.
For "General->Basic::Version" I have it set to "Windows 7 (64-bit)". This is probably the first thing to check - if you have it set t something other than what you are installing, you can have trouble installing, since VirtualBox can tailor the behavior depending on what you have set.
Under System->Motherboard, I have Chipset=PIIX3, and "Enable I/O APIC" checked. On the processor tab, I have only one processor selected, the PAE/NX box is not checked. On the acceleration tab, I have Paravirtualization Interface set to "Default", and both "Enable VT-x/AMD-V" and "Enable Nested Paging" checked.
Those are the most likely ones that will get you in trouble.
There is another potential gotcha - I don't know what type of hard drive you are creating the vhd on, but if the sector size is 4096 (common with terrabyte external drives), then VirtualBox won't be able to deal with it properly. But from the sounds of it, you aren't far enough along for this to be the problem.

Nevermind... I think I got this. I enabled virtualization in BIOS and now it shows 64 bit and it will start up. Only problem now is that it keeps pausing. I need to upgrade the memory on my laptop now... Then maybe it'll work.

Using the .ova file from nsjames I've got the virtual machine installed and can run it fine on a 2011 Mac laptop using VirtualBox. VIDA starts fine, that's not an issue.
However, while the VM can see my DICE unit through USB, it won't start up the device. Is this a problem with the driver on the VM? Any suggestions how to deal with this? I don't drive Windows boxes very often.
This is the DICE I have, link is not very informative I know but the point is I tried to just go with a reputable, volume seller: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 1485755016

It sounds like it's either a driver issue or you didn't select the right port for it in Device Manager. Does VIDA require COM1? It's definitely within the VM though if you can see it on there.erikv11 wrote: ↑08 Sep 2017, 12:50 Using the .ova file from nsjames I've got the virtual machine installed and can run it fine on a 2011 Mac laptop using VirtualBox. I don't see any way to make port selections for USB.
The unit mounts fine as a DiCE (see images) but Windows says it can not start. When I check to update driver I get "you have the most up to date driver installed." I'm wondering how to check the firmware of the DiCE unit I received, maybe it is behind the driver (been reading about other travails with these units).
The DiCE came with a CD to install Vadis 2014D I suppose I could try to put that on the VM, see if it recognizes the DiCE unit. Becoming a PITA, I was hoping for a set up that just works lol

If DiCE doesn't show under ports, then the driver might not be correct. Again, I've never used VIDA with DiCE, but I know from using Vol-FCR, Brick-Diag, and PA Soft for BMW that these devices are typically installed under COM ports so the software can access them.

You have been stalwart in getting me this far, thanks so much. Hmmm ... can anyone else out there confirm?
As I understand the DiCE doesn't use a serial port connection, it uses a USB port ... its got a USB port driver ... The link nicely explains how to change the port mapping (e.g. COM10 to COM3) but this isn't using a COM port it is using a USB port. Also I don't have the typical "Ports" in the Device manager list, I am also familiar with that from using TurboTunerPro and Vol-FCR on a PC box. Never used them on a VM though running inside a Mac, like I have here.
Again, the computer (VM) can see the device (DiCE) in the USB port, it just doesn't like what it sees so it won't "start it up" whatever that means exactly. I don't think this is a COM port issue. But happy to be wrong, if that gets it going!

Ah, if it is USB it probably won't do much. Usually the drivers will change it to a COM port if it needs to be a serial connection. If you're using the correct driver and it shows that it's USB, then I would assume it's USB.
Someone else will have to chime in at this point!
