Yeah, that probably would have been easier. I was trying to do what I could without digging out a saw, haha.

Didn't you mention that your dad was an auto painter? I would sure enlist a pro rather than use a rattle can. Black will show every defect.

He has quite a bit of experience painting. He paints cabinets, but he has done a few cars. Don't worry, we're not going to use a rattle can! Especially after dealing with the patch job on the driver's side.dosbricks wrote:Didn't you mention that your dad was an auto painter? I would sure enlist a pro rather than use a rattle can. Rattle can? Just get rustoleum and a brush. Just like my first Karmann Ghia convertible I painted...

Just got done installing new spark plugs. The car had a nice, powerful start, and ran great. My only issue is that there seems to be a smell. Not sure what it is, but I assume it's related to the plugs. Sort of like a metallic cat urine smell (I know, sounds great...). Could be some PB Blaster/WD40 reside that was burning off, but I think it may be related to the plugs.
I had to dry lots of oil out of cylinder 2, but the others weren't bad. None of the others broke, but they all had at least a LITTLE bit of oil on them. The new spark plugs didn't seem to be gapped correctly, and I couldn't tell if there was an issue. I know these cars don't like plugs that aren't properly gapped.
You gotta be careful with RockAuto... I buy 0.028 in. plugs, and I get 0.035-ish in. I tried to close up the gap a little, and now it's not as far off.

I guess the RTV is a poor mans PCV fix for keep oil out of the spark plugs.
I had offered my, not to old, wires and cap to another person that did not respond. You are welcome to them.
May help keep the $$ in the wallet a few days longer.
Metallic cat urine.."Can't you smell that smell, the smell is all around you"

Too bad that NKG Iridium broke. The electrodes looked good. They are pricy, and according to cn90 they last 100k miles.
Hey, it was cn90 who suggested a few cans of black Dupli-Color paint. Am I so gullible as to not recognize when he is posting some tongue-in-cheek humor??? Looks like I still have a lot to learn about this forum!

That NGK spark plug broke in half b/c of installation and/or removal error. I have had the Iridium plugs in my BMWs and Volvos for some 50K, zero break or issues.
Yes, Duplicolor gloss black paint works just fine. It has to be indoor and temp >10C. I was not joking.

This is another reason I removed the plastic cosmetic cover. This way any oil leak, either from spillage during oil change or topping up or bad cap seal, can be seen right away. With the cosmetic cover in place, the problem is very well hidden from view.bmdubya1198 wrote:...The spark plug well was full of oil, including the boot. I'm going to assume this is a combination of the PCV and the oil cap seal. I just replaced the oil cap seal today...
