Solved, thankfully. I tossed out the VM, re-imported the .ova to start from scratch and looked carefully now at the USB settings. The problem was my VMWare installation needed a tweak. Its was running as USB 1.0 only, but the VM image from nsjames is set up for USB 2.0. The hardware ports on my Mac are USB 2.0.
To enable USB 2.0 in VirtualBox, I downloaded and installed VirtualBox 5.1.26 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack, and immediately the DiCE unit was plug and play with the VM.
