Or try to lubricate it at least to see if it is partially seized. This is often missed as a steering issue.

The corrosion and friction actually happen under the U-joint caps, you can't lubricate that. And greasing U-joints externally is generally no go, since it only attracts dirt.

I was suggesting it only to try to identify the cause of the issue. If it is the issue then replace it. Ig not, clean off the penetrating oil excess.

It is fairly easy to test it directly. Go under the dash, disconnect the shaft (one bolt), remove the boot and here you go: you can twist it in any direction and check U-joint.

I am very lazy and have sprayed PB Blaster from afar to shut mine up in the past prior to replacement.

I remember someone mentioning to baste it in grease and use a torch to melt it into the joint

Negative, we did not touch the intermediate shaft.
But thanks for the suggestion! We will consider the disconnect from steering column approach to test it's overall friction in any accessible axis.

This is a very good suggestion. I had funny feeling steering in my Titanium grey 2007 S60 and found that the universal joint is stuck in one direction. Then the bolt holding it clamped to the steering rack snapped when I was trying to loosen it. Then after I cut the old part off the rack by hand and with a reciprocating saw, I found that I had the wrong version of the replacement part. The early cars have a different interface to the steering rack compared to the 2005+ P2 cars.

Yes there was a change in 2004 regarding the shaft. One is slightly smaller than the other. Measure the length to ensure you select the correct one when you order it.
