I cut one open after about 12,000 miles. It has a paper filter and also contains a small magnet. The magnet had the usual charcoal colored fine particles on it. The paper filter was very clean, just a bit of dark colored material on it. IPD recommended to change the first filter after 12,000 miles if the car is high mileage. Then the next filter can go longer.
I have a 2001 S60 T-5 with intake and exhaust mods and a RICA stage II tune. It presently has 108,000 miles on it. No transmission issues yet. I have done two drain and fill fluid changes since I bought it with 73,000 miles.

Thanks Chestermo for that data point. I can only think the added filtering can help and not hurt the Volvo transmission.
The Magnefine filter also has bypass built in which allows the fluids to bypass if filter is clogged.
Ed7, if you have any other concerns I'm still listening.

Just a quick update: 3000miles since the install of Magnefine filter with trans oil and filter change. No issues to report.
As the weather got significantly cooler, I notice less issues. This makes me believe trans oil temperature plays key role which goes back to Alex's install of external trans oil cooler. I need to get that done before next summer.

I'm interested in doing this on my 98 V70 Turbo. Is it basically the same or is there a difference in which hose I should use for the filter? I'm thinking I read someplace that the 98 V70 pumps fluid out of the top hose (pump and replace fluid thing is where I learned this I think) but that 2001 and up there is a kind of fundamental change in fluid flow. So, similar instructions for a 98 or is the install quite different.
Thanks
Thanks

Same instruction but reverse the direction of the Magnefine filter. They are marked with flow arrow. For my 2001 the trans oil flows out of radiator spout at the top hose location. I verified this by starting the engine with the hose disconnected.

Sorry to bump an old posted but I thought I would post a follow up. So the Volvo is now at 125K miles and I replaced the filter this weekend. So far no adverse effects from the filter. Transmission still functions without any shifts issues, didn't have any before and still doesn't.
Out of curiosity I cut the filter open and examined both the ring magnet and paper filter. The magnet did have some crud stuck to it, about the same as the magnet drain plug for an oil change after an 5K. Nothing excessive but better stuck to the magnet then floating around in the fluid. Not sure how to describe the paper filter portion. Blackened but not bad.
Wish I had picture, but cutting the filter open was a messy job.

I've been waiting for more than 3 years for you to post those air duct removal pictures.velorider wrote: Something I forgot to mention in the original post is I removed the air duct to the air box to give me more room to work. This is the black plastic duct running from on top of the radiator to the bottom of the air box. Removal is easy, no bolts to remove. The directions below make it sound more difficult then it is.
1. The duck flattens where it goes over the radiator. Wiggle it a little and you can see it move through a hole in the metal just in front of the radiator.
2. Looking through the hole you can see it snaps over a knob. Using a screw driver slide it over the knob.
3. Once the front is removed the side connected to the air box, just slides out.
I'll edit this tonight and post some pictures of the removal process.

Is the return hose on a '96 850 the same size (3/8)? I am thinking of putting one of these on my fiance's 155k mile trans to keep it going - already have one on the power steering in my 240.

Last Saturday I emailed Magnefine asking if it was OK to use the 5/16” filter, which I have 2 on a 3/8” hose. Here is the reply from Greg at Magnefine:
“No I would use the correct size. If it were a bigger filter going into a smaller line that would be ok.”
If unsure, the difference is only 1/16” from 5/16 to 3/8 so go with the 3/8” Filter.
