Is it the consensus that Volvo OEM brand is the way to go?
From my research, Reinz or Elring ($3-4) seals do not last that long.

I picked mine up from napa, lasted over 60k miles on the 850 before it went to the scrapper.
and so far about 3k miles on the s70.

to my surprise the seals i removed were elring brand. i doubt the previous owner replaced these but i also doubt the engine came with these so who know but I did replace with aftermarket seals because its such an easy job I wouldn't mind doing it again. the volvo seals are like 23$ a pop on fcp...
all went well, used the screwdriver method. no leaks!!!

Stupid question but I read here:
I suggest you use OEM cam seals. My local dealer wanted $25 per seal (x4). I found them at another dealership for $11 per seal, plus $9 shipping, still saved about $50 with the shipping. Contact me if you need the dealership information to save money.
Do I need FOUR seals or TWO? I'm assuming two since there are two cams... right? The language is a little confusing.

Two front and two rear. Get the genuine Volvo ones.

Here's a great review of cam seal brands:
http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/15 ... olvo-only/

I recommend genuine Volvo on so many parts, and cam seals has always been one of them. But now, for the rears, I advise going to NAPA and picking up the SKF 11809 for less than $10. Volvo wants way too much for the exact same part.

so the same part is behind the cam gears as is behind the cam sensor and rotor? I've called around and nobody has the "rear" seal but they have the "front" one available.

I'm going to try the Napa part, haven't called them yet. I have dried oil smeared around both cams so I'm assuming that both seals are toast. The front side seems to be fine. I would imagine the front seals are a major repair since the cam gears and timing belt are removed.

There are two different seals.

The rear cam seals are both the same, that's one seal. You buy two of them, one goes under the distributor and one under the cam sensor.

The front cam seals are both the same, that's the other seal. And you need two of those, one behind each cam sprocket.

So those "fronts" that everybody has in stock, won't help you here. And yeah, changing front cam seals is a PITA, changing rear cam seals is pretty easy, you've got that pegged.

Front cam seals are on the timing belt side.
Rear cam seals are on the other side.

They are different sizes.
Make sure you get the right one.

REAR Cam seals. You need qty = 2.

Today, I just installed new REAR Cam seals: SKF 11809 seals, beautiful seals, excellent construction/quality.
Probably SKF is OEM Volvo seals.

I will post some pics tonight/tomorrow.

NAPA may or may not have these SKF 11809 seals. Call ahead.
NAPAS lists the SKF 11809 seals for $9.50.
Make sure it is SKF brand and nothing else!
