E170, that good to hear, I haven't done the tranny fluid in the S60 yet.
jablackburn, I did the "neutral stop" test in my V70, it must have been done before I got the car, as it doesn't exhibit the problem.
I haven't driven the wifes S60 in many week, will test it soon.

I have look at all docs and can not find anything about transmission service. I can't even find a drain plug.
Does this service apply to a 98 V70?
If so where is the drain plug?
And is there an internal filter?
Great write-up.

Here's the write-up for the earlier cars...the plug is right behind the front axle on the drivers side, in between 2 brake fluid lines:

Almost 2 months on the Type IV Fluid with 4,500 miles under the belt and no hiccups what so ever...smooth as silk.

This is by far the best post regarding this that I have seen. Pictures are great and will be a good reference in the future when I decide to do this to my 01 (again as I have done it before with tube). I am bookmarking this. Thanks!

Thanks, E170_Driver. I bought a 2001 V70 2.4T less than a month ago and have already spent over $1,800 catching up the maintenance the slackers who owned it before couldn't be bothered with, including $224 to the local dealer to flush and refill the transmission. Before buying the car I'd researched reliability issues on every car within my desired price range, with a preference for Volvos as I was reluctantly replacing my '94 960 after too many issues with the a/c. Plus, it had 213,000 miles on it and my wife wouldn't ride from South Carolina to Illinois in it even after I'd reassured that was low mileage on a 960.
Nothing showed up in web research about the transmission being a problem on these cars. In fact they were shown as one of the most problem free cars available. So I'm a little perturbed now to find that the transmission is considered to be a problem area, and a potentially very expensive on.
So I really appreciate your excellent article on cycling out the transmission fluid and will plan on doing that every 30k miles or so. I'd done a similar process on the 960 on a regular basis and had no issues with it until it sat too much and then the lights would go wild on the shifter and the dash would light up a fireworks show, until I got it out and drove it until it was good and warm. Then I could shut it off and the lights would all go back to normal when the car was restarted.
You did such a great job with your description and photos I really thought those of us who will profit from your experience and the writeup you did should thank you for it.
Now I'll take my V90 questions to the appropriate place and get out of your V70 area.

PPCGM,
I am glad you found this write-up helpful; as mentioned before I am by no means a mechanic but I have worked on my Jeep & VW for years. Got over 5,000 miles on the Toyota ATF and have had no problems ever since I did the drain and fill procedure. I check the fluid level on a regular basis and make sure there are no leaks when I do my oil changes every 2 months or 5,000 miles. Best of luck.

Is it necessary to drain and fill the transmission?
I got a fluid change about 8,000 miles ago at a local Jiffy Lube. They did NOT flush the tranny, just drained it and filled it with new fluid. Should I drain and fill with new fluid to get some of the older fluid that was in the torque converter out?
The transmission does slip a little still.
