For some reason I didn't open the hood when I started having these issues. no clue why - seems like that should have been the first thing i did. After the post and feedback yesterday - i resolved to take a look and disconnect the MAF sensor and get some definitive answer and that's when i saw the damage.... I started thinking what the hell caused this damage? Squirrel? the ignition coil gone bad? then I remembered saturday morning - that was when I first had these issues... and that was the morning we saw the ground hog waddle away from beneath the car when we parked it at the store. I finally put the two together. Looks like a new hood mat is in order (57 from FCP) - anybody know if the MAF wiring setup can be ordered? It looks like a nightmare to pull out and replace.

Around here, if you don't care for bears around your place, you don't leave food out.
Same solution for the garage. Don't store anything that they can eat near a cozy car.
Close up anyplace that provides access from the outside and get any food outta there
or secure it in rodent proof storage containers.

1. Re ABS wiring. I think it is factory stuff, so finding any wiring connector in any car is a head ache.
Most people do exactly what you did: Splice and Butt connect it.
It should be fine for the remaining life of the car.

2. How to deter rodents: as I mentioned above, sprinkle a little paprika at the bottom of the engine splsh shield area.
Rodents hate paprika. Look under "Moles, Voles and Groundhog":
