To me that says more about JVC than anything (I've never been a fan). I've got an older Alpine CDA-9851, single DIN mounted like j_cd did his (I put the "cubby hole" on bottom) and it blows the factory stereo away, on the same 16 year old stock speakers the factory stereo was driving.

How old was that JVC? Things like D/A Converters (digital-to-analog) get better every couple years. I don't know if the new cd changer is sending a digital or analog signal to the head unit, but that could explain it. That or the JVC either had a crappy amp or an impedance mismatch.
I too am using the stock speakers, which may be Alpines in the first place, not sure. The new Alpine head unit sounds better than the stock stereo. Wish I would hurry up and finish working on the car so I can listen to it again.
