What is everyone's average mpg?

'97 855 T5: City (true city - short trips, less than 2 miles each, steep hills in town): ~15mpg

Highway: 24-26mpg (roof rack on) 26-28mpg (roof rack off).

WIth a mix of some freeway and lots of street driving, I average around 20 mpg. If it's all highway miles, and the oil and spark plugs are brand new, probably about 23.5 mpg at the best.

I should note that I frequently let my engine idle for several minutes after anything but a short trip. The turbo spins at 70,000 times per minute or something. They get very hot. I've read that it can take as long as 10 minutes for a turbocharger to cool down. So I like to keep the oil and coolant flowing to the turbo for at least a minute or two. I'm sure that idling eats some gas.

Unless you have been using significant amounts of boost in the minute or so before you park the car, letting these cars turbos cool down is a waste of time. The airflow from even a minute or two of driving out of boost will do far more to cool things than letting it sit at idle. In any case, these turbos are not packed in tightly (lots of airflow) and not typically a problem point on these cars.

OK thanks for that information. I like to keep my rebuilt turbo as healthy as possible. Good to know. In that case maybe I can get 24 mpg highway.

1996 850 glt 181,500 28+ highway 25 with mixed city highway.
400-425 miles till refill light comes on. 450 till fumes.
