erik, you are confused.

I am not confused. At 15 years/150K, most of these dipsticks are either:
a. walking out because of blocked PCV system
b. or...broken at handle.

When I took the old dipstick out, the handle was broken but the O-ring was still good.
The handle, being plastic, usually goes first. The O-ring was remarkably good at 15y/150K.

Well, $15 later using an 850 dipstick, I already move on rather than discussing minutia. I think it is a waste of time to change the O-ring, only to have the handle broken a month later.

IMHO, $15 is not that much these days. A full tank of gasoline is now $50-$60.

OK I thought so, no worries. A broken dipstick handle is indeed another, but related issue.

I hate to break it to you but: everything on this forum is minutiae.

Everything.

I agree with you that forums can get into minutiae, that part I understand.

But, there are times when minutiae is important, and other time, not so.

1. Minutiae when one rebuilds en engine is very important, every spec/tolerance is very crucial.
Bearing tolerance is down to thousandth of an inch etc.

2. Minutiae about Bosch MAF vs aftermarket MAF, yes this is important because only the Bosch works.
Likewise for cap/rotor, Bougicord.

3. But dipstick? This one does not excite me, sorry!

I can no longer go back and edit my original post so here is the summary with correct part numbers. Oh and at least one pic that I promised :D

Replace dipstick and tube with better redesigned part:
9497557 - Volvo Oil Dipstick Red Handle $24.09
9497554 - Volvo Oil Dipstick Tube (C70 S70 V70) $26.44
30637865 - Volvo Oil Dipstick Seal / Tube O-ring (Lower) $2.82
I wanted to use all genuine OEM parts from the same vendor. Prices are from Tasca Parts on 3/8/13.

New O-ring:
955973 - Volvo Oil Dipstick O-Ring $2.01ea, Engine oil dipstick O-ring for any any S/V 70 98-00, C70 98-04, V70 turbo 01-07 all, S60 turbo 01-07 all, S60/V70 non-turbo 01-04, S80 5cyl all, XC90 5cyl all.

As cn90 said,
Replace the dipstick (includes new O-ring):
1271920 - “The label says 1271920 but the dipstick clearly has 1271921 engraved on it!” My original dipstick was 9454823 so I didn’t realize this was a possibility until after ordering the redesigned parts.

Dipstick 9497557 replaces 9454823
Dipstick tube AKA "pipe" 9497554 replaces 9207964
Dipstick Seal 30637865 (for the bottom end of the tube)
-OR-
Engine Dipstick O-Ring 955973
-OR-
Dipstick 1271920 replaces (and in fact is) 1271921

My "850" dipstick PN 1271920 works just fine 1.5 years later.
Zero issues whatsoever, it is simple like 1-2-3: walk into dealer, buy the 850-style dipstick for $16.
Swap the dipstick, donate the old dipstick back to the dealer lol...
